MBP 17" 2007:- I've tried quite hard to like this machine, using Linux. But there were always problems, the main one being a persistent inability to shut down or restart. Not every time, but most times. Really annoying. Worst thing? Not fixable. It's apparently down to the firmware, which works well with macOS, but not with much else. It throws up a USB-related error and just stops, requiring a forced shutdown.
Having spent a couple of hours trying all the fixes I could find, courtesy of a very knowledgeable guy on the MX Linux forum, I gave up.
Then the postie arrived, bringing with him 2x4GB DDR2-800 SODIMMs. These went into my wife's Compaq CQ56, and the 6GB of Hynix RAM from that went into this old Macbook. I've spent the rest of the day so far returning it to El Capitan and setting up mail and browser so it can be used as a basic daily driver. FF Dynasty 147 and Thunderbird 78ESR are working well, although I'd like something more recent in mail if it's not too irksome.
Whatever, here it is, and in macOS at least, it's a cracker.
