I love my Denon AH-D2000's. However, an external headphone amp will make most higher end headphones perform even better.

Exactly

Ditch the Logitech and get a decent dac/headphone amp. Have a look at this one http://www.headfonia.com/fiio-e9-dekstop-amplifier/

its a dac/amp combo and the dac section can also work as a portable amp. For any of the headphones you've listened to you've not really let them shine by giving them the best signal and amplification.

The beats are basically a headphone with a LOUD setting that you cant turn off.

If you fancy a cheap tryout get a pair of these http://www.headfonia.com/superlux-hd668b/ i sold a pair of Sennheiser HD650's because they are far more realistic. £35 here in the UK

been using the Sony MDR-V700 for about 9 years or so now. Still no problems what-so-ever.

oh, using it as a drum and bass dj and I love em.

Do those sonys use pleather pads? If so how have they held up for those 9 years?

No, it's not synthetic leather. Here is a pic. I still haven't found a better headphone ever since. I just really love these.
As you can see it's kinda worn-down by now:) (flash + bad lights too..)
But seriously. After 9 years it's still sounding as if it was brand new. I use these headphones 5x2 hours during the weekdays, then 1x4 hours during saturday nights when mixing in the clubs... I can only recommend these!

Sony MDR-700

edit: just googled it. $78.24 from Amazon. I bought this for like $400 in Santa Monica in 2001 or so. For 80 bucks this is a steal.

The key word is Headphone Amp! Headphone Amp! Headphone Amp!

When dealing with High quality Headphones, and portable devices such as IPhone/IPOD you need a Headphone Amp to drive the headphones full potential. The built in amp that's in the Iphone/Ipod is not powerful enough to support the higher end headphones. There's no way the Beats are better than the Denon AH-D2000, you just never felt it's full potential.

At 25ohms the D2000 should be plenty good unamped, but like the M50 it does get a bit punchier and tighter while amped.

I do agree though, the D2000s shouldn't be sounding worse than the Beats by Dre.

wow, those are really done in! Did you take any measures to clean it or protect it during those 10 years, or just take them on and off?
