after looking around and listening to what other people have suggested, i have changed my choices:

Audio Technica A700
Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro's 80 ohm
Sennheiser HD 555

The Sennheiser's are the cheapest, but they are open. The beyer are the most expensive, and I may not be able to make the price. What out of these three would be the best for the type of music that I listen to?

I am going to make a choice tomorrow as to which to buy, so any recommendations sooner the better. I can't wait to order one of these three headphones!

I totally forgot about the beyerdynamic DT770 Pros!!! Given your type of music (trance, rap, etc.) the DT770-80s will be one of your best bets. I still remember listening to Tiesto and Daft Punk through those cans...they were amazing.

The DT770-80s benefit a lot from an amp though...so that may push you over your budget.

would the boostaroo amp do enough for me. I'm a beginner user, would the boostaroo be enough to give the DT 770 pros a little extra?

Still love my Sennheiser HD212Pro. Great for Trance, Hip-Hop, any Bass thump lovers. I watched DVD 'Transformers' and 'Die Hard 4.0' on my MBP with this headphone. It really blown me away !!!!!

well guys, thanks for all the help.
I decided to go with the Audio Technica ATHA700's from Amazon.com

If they do not turn out to be what I wanted, ill return them and get the AKG K271's with an amp.

Thanks again!

Jesseton,
With the volume at a moderate level, how much of the outside world gets in? would an airplane be a pain to listen with these in? or how bout in a car?

I actually just tested this with my 595 headphones, with my mp3 at medium volume, and my brother was watching a movie pretty loud, i stood in there and i could only very faintly hear the movie, and i told him to talk, i could hear him talking, but i couldn't hear words and details, so these headphones kindof block out most of the outside world, what i mean is you can tell if someone is talking, but you cant hear what they are saying, just enough to know they are speaking, at a loud level you cant hear anything that i know of in the outside world. oh and with these headphones you dont even need them very loud at all.

in a car or plane when noise is louder, due to everything closer together, the sound coming from the headphones over powers that of the outside world, so you can still not hear other stuff. hopefully that all makes sense.

After stumbling upon this thread, I decided to look into getting a good pair of headphones as after awhile, my in ear Bose earbuds become rather uncomfortable.

From reading the reviews on Amazon, it would appear that the Sennheiser models are designed for people with smallish heads? I happen to have a rather large noggin, and it's gotten even larger when I decided to grow out my hair, having kept it short, after six years in the Army Nat'l Guard.

I guess the only way to know a fit would be to try out the headphones personally, but anyone with a size 7+ cap size know of any decent sounding, comfortable headphones?

Every headphone listed in my previous post in this thread fits me just fine and I am 7 1/4 cap size. I think you'll find that very few high end cans won't fit. I had one pair of grado's, SR225s I believe that I had to bend a little bit to sit flat, but I think that was a misaligned adjustment rod on one of the earpieces. The full size Sennheiser and AKG cans have plenty of adjustment. Hope that helps.

The Sennheisers can be adjusted a great deal, I don't see how you could NOT get them on your head.

I am a proud owner of Beyerdynamic DT-770 (80).
Sound fantastic, event on iPods.

I did some listening tests at a local store and picked them without any doubt. Beyerdynamic as a brand is a little more obscure to general public then Sennheiser and so on, but it is a firm favourite among pros.

One important point for me was also build quality. No plastic in sight, it's all solid metal and velvet on ears, I love them! :)

hey guys, sorry for bringing up an old thread, but I didnt feel like starting a new one...

Anyways, as I said before, I received my Audio Technica A700's a week ago, and they sounded amazing! But, they are HUGE !!! I did not take heed to those that told me they were large, I had to see for myself. So, I sent them back since it would be too hard to travel with them.

So I'm back looking for a set of headphones. I posted over at head-fi.org, but they keep recommending different phones, and all I want is some suggestions on the ones that I'm looking at, I have spent too much time on this already, and just need to choose out of these, so here they are.

Denon D1000
Equation Audio RP-21
Sennheiser HD 555
Audio Technica ATH M50

Which of these do you guys think would be best for me. I listen to all kinds of music, but like good tight bass. I really liked the sound of the A700's so if any of these are similar, that would be a plus. Also, Im assuming that none of these will sound worse that the A700's, i dont want to go back in quality.

Thanks a lot,

One last thing. I found a pair of the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro's 80 ohm for 150. Would they work for me? Are they any smaller than the A700's? hopefully they are sturdy cause they will have to fit in my backpack for traveling.

oh: unamped btw... for now

Of the cans you listed, I would tend to go with the Sennheiser HD 555 in regards to your musical preference, price range, comfort and lack of headphone amp. They will sound better with an amp but an iPod or the like should drive them with adequate results.

I just received my Alessandro MS1's a few days ago and I am quite impressed with them for the money (Alessandro headphone are literally modified Grados) and they do sound great with my pocket amp and are comfortable for my head (7 1/2 hat size).

Oh, and in regards to the Beyerdynamic DT770's I think the Sennheiser HD 555's run at 50 ohms, so they are easier to amplify than the Beyerdynamic DT770.

thanks, Im going to try out the sennheiser's tomorrow...

any other suggestions based on the above post by me?

also, none of these headphones will sound worse than the Audio Technica A700's will they?

you mentioned that isolation from outside noise was a factor for you, hence the reccomendations of iems and the beyerdynamic 770s. If that is still important to you, the 555s will be a dissapointment.

The 555s are a good sub-$100 set of headphones. I personally find my lower end grados more satisfying but they aren't as comfortable as the 555s.

Among the cans on your list, I'd get the 555s. I'm not clear where you are coming up with your options but spending some time searching on head-fi will do you some good.

i have the bose tri port over ear headphones. i love them. really comfy and good sound (to me at least). my mom get them refurbed from a bose outlet (dont worry, they replace all the fabric). i think they were 99 bucks on sale
