Hey, I do appreciate all the suggestions - I really do, and I'm not ungrateful. We are all adults here (right?). This is not about that. It's about looking for a solution, like adults. No whining, and no consolation prizes. I prefer the OS X way of doing things 99% of the time, but some things are done better in windows - that's just a fact. Now, that doesn't mean there aren't work-arounds, and there were many good suggestions. I'm just trying for a perfect 10 :) can you blame me? That's what this is all about - OS X on top, not just "almost as good" in any way :) :) :)

Whoa, relax man, I didn't think there was anything in my post that accused you of liking Windows better than the Mac OS, was there? As far as what Windows does better, it's all in the opinion of the person using it rather than it being "better" for all. As some mentioned here they don't use the recent items list in Windows and personally I used to get annoyed by the same item appearing in the start menu when I didn't want it there.

However this is why the Mac OS and Windows can easily co-exist with one another because each has it's own strengths. There will be quite a switch in the preferred OS after MobileMe surfaces. :)

are you sure you didnt like that smartfolder suggestion? i just tried it and it does exactly what you requested. all opened or modified files within the last so many days (thats days, already that gives you more flexibility than windows). and the option to "call" the list of files is in every finder window in the side bar. why dont you like that?

There is no "fact" involved here, just a preference, which is cool. The great thing about the Mac is that you've been given any number of options of alternatives, totally customizable to your needs, unlike Windows, which basically gives you one way, and that's it.

Try some of the methods suggested, you may be surprised. As was mentioned earlier, there may be a few minutes involved in a one-time setup, but hey, is every moment of life that critical? (Trick question--you're wasting time on MR, we know it's not! :p)

Wow! This thread already has two "Beatles" contributing! Is the OP waiting for all 4? :D

Try This...

Go to System Preferences, select Appearance and then set a value of 0 to Recent Servers and Recent Applications. This way only documents will appear under the Apple Menu Bar/Recent Items (up the value if you want to see more documents).

Its just like Windows:
1 click on the Apple logo, highlight Recent Items and 1 click on your selected document (2 clicks)...
vs
1 click on the Start Menu, 1 click on the Recent Documents button, 1 click on your selected document (3 clicks).

Doesn't work for me. It kills the dock, but that's it. Nothing changes, still the same old dock, no new icon or anything :( When I try it without the killall Dock, nothing at all happens, no change.

Sorry, wasn't aware that you are running Tiger. It's probably a Leopard thing- too bad, it's exactly what you are looking for, I suppose.
