What if M1 Display dies?

I'm thinking about getting an M1 iMac; however, what happens if 4 years down the road, the display dies (or whatever).

Can you hook in an external display and use that as the primary display (i.e. deactivate the internal one)?

Just thinking longterm.

I read that, and speaking for myself, I intend to keep it covered by AppleCare until I trade it in for something else. Having said that, this is my fourth macbook, and the display didn't break on the 3 previous, so I'd be shocked if the display malfunctioned.

My 2015 iMac is still running strong. I am more concerned that I want to replace the guts while the monitor is still rocking!

Agreed. I have a 2012 iMac still working as good as new, and none of my other Macs had any issues with the display except one: a 2008 MacBook where the display inverter failed after quite a few years. Relatively cheap part to replace yourself if out of warranty, but requires a lot of disassembly.
