If someone goes into a store, establishes a new account and buys and iPhone, what exactly happens if they turn right around and cancels their contract?

It sounds crazy, but can they make someone return the phone?
Is there a way to activate/use the iPhone without going into the store?
Will normal SIM cards work correctly in the iPhone?

If you cancel your contract within 30 days, they take your phone. After that it's $175 for early termination fee.

What would be the penalty for not returning the iPhone?

They will probably just bill you for it on your first month's bill

How can they charge you for the phone when you already purchased it?

OK, part two of this question.

What if you buy an iPhone and then ask to have another number, which was recently cancelled after buying the iPhone, ported to the new account? Is that possible?
