What if Apple keeps the aluminum line as is since sales have been good and starts pointing customers up to SS and Edition for higher profit margins?

S3 would stay around with only a slight price decrease like $30... and the $600 and up models would have the larger display.

Doubt it. I do not see them leaving the aluminum device in the dust on upgrades. That has likely been thier best seller in terms of casing.

You may have a fair point, and Apple has yet to do this but I could see them pulling it off. Apple Watch this past year has seem to taken off and Apple making the bigger screen and added health sensor only for the SS and ceramic models would help justify and separate the higher end models from the base Aluminum models.

Outside of LTE, the major price difference is the casing - not feature set.

Your thread title states “What if the S4 big screen is only on SS and Edition”, why would Apple alienate the aluminum model from having a larger dispay? Apple Even reduced the price of the aluminum model starting for the Series one just attract more consumers to make it more price friendly and even expanded into third party retailers, right there should tell you a lot how much they value the 7000 series aluminum sport model.

For the record, Most retailers don’t even stock the stainless steel or ceramic models, it’s primarily just the aluminum, it would be counterproductive if they did not include the larger display. Apple likely will offer _all_ the Apple Watch models with the new display sizes.

It is likely overall cheeper for Apple to order all screen sizes and manufacturing parts/system to the same specs.

Plus sales would suffer. Apple would sell less watches since many would opt to wait a year hoping for the size upgrade.

It would provide more of a reason to upgrade to the SS or ceramic models. Materials alone aren't enough for most people, but perhaps a larger screen would be?

I’m in agreement with this. I think that Apple offering the ceramic casing is not enough for consumer want to pay that price tag that is *more* than three times the cost as the sport model Apple Watch, when they all do the same thing, when the consumer is just paying for materials only. And it also doesn’t help that most retailers don’t even stock the stainless or ceramic models in store, it’s usually just the Sport model, if you want the more premium stainless or ceramic models, they either have to be ordered for you, or you have to go to direct through Apple.

My Apple store doesn’t stock ceramic models or have one to try on for fear of theft. Not even a gray ceramic in display.

I think employee also said there’s no space black SS to try on either.

I am confused. So if they push the larger screen to models that are only available via online order, in-store order or an Apple Store, how does that benefit Apple in anyway? Apple would prefer you walk out with their device, regardless of where you buy it from.

The ceramic models are meant as a luxury item - they are not intended to be feature separating.

I get where some people can justify this - think the feature set between the plus and non-plus iPhone models and how the larger screen got the better camera, more camera features, etc. But I do not feel the Apple Watch is going to follow suit.

I don’t think you understood my post. I’m not referring to anything about the more premium models having the larger display exclusively. What I’m saying, is that the only real way to have availability of the ceramic or stainless model, is to order online or in an Apple store. Most retailers around me don’t even stock those specific models, primarily because of the price point and that they’re not top sellers compared to the aluminum model, which is significantly cheaper.

Here’s my two cents, and a few example nightmare scenarios for most of us just for fun :p

Apple WILL change the format again this year. They will skirt us all one step closer to the higher tier yet again. It has happened gradually as each new Series is released, Apple takes something away from the cheapest version of the watch. First if I understand correctly it was the charger cord length. Then after waterproofing got added that became another pricegated feature. Ceramic backs for your lovely HR sensor was one of the next features to become pricegated. What will it be this time? Maybe the larger screens. I’m not sure. It’s greedy, and it’s upsetting, but ultimately wouldn’t it make you upgrade to the SS to get it? I could see all of us fanatics feeling forced into it, then angry, then happy that we still even get to keep all of the fun of upgrading and having access to all the new features a Series upgrade to the Apple Watch brings. And then they’ll gut something else when S5 comes out. Probably then the feature they pricegate will be the haptic crown and side button with force touch.

Now for the fun nightmare scenario that will keep us all up at night:

What if they start limiting some features to only the Apple Watch Edition???? THE HORROR!!!

Another nightmare scenario would be if they decide to increase the price of all versions of the watch by $100, new bands are required and all “old” bands become incompatible, and the new bands are $75. And they have no extra features save for being seamlessly compatible with the S4.

Then I keep my Series 3 Stainless, which I'm very happy with.. :)

I think this is a bit far fetched, but you prefaced it that way. Here is the thing, outside of LTE - what feature set has only been offered on a stainless steel or ceramic model? Obviously the cases. I have only recently been following them (late last year, this year) as I plan for my first purchase of one.
