Nope,

I bought an iPod before I had downloaded my first MP3. At that point I just had files that I ripped form CD. I didn't start using ITMS until this last winter.

I bought an iPod for use on a PC before iTunes was available for windows. I had to use musicmatch or something. It was so unorganised but the iPod made it all ok.

Then I bought a Mac and haven't looked back :p It took me a while to get all my music organised but iTunes was a godsend. I'm still in the process of adding ratings and adding more music. hehe.

Here in Australia there is no ITMS. We don't have it because the record companies here are still haggling over the price, but I would be more inclined to continue purchasing the cd rather than download lesser quality tracks in any case.

I bought an iPod before the iTMS came, and imagine I would still do so were the situation the same today. However few would argue that the iPod would become the icon it is today without the iTMS. The mass market acceptance has come almost exclusively on the back of the iTMS, and while it still would be a high selling player - maybe even the number one - the opposition using WMA based players (and DRM) would be a much more real threat than they are now, and, in turn, more viable options for most of the market (ie PC users).

No iTMS? Then I wouldn't get the free tracks each week or listen to the previews. Other than that, I rarely use it, I still stick with the high quality CDs. In fact the last purchase I recall making was the McCartney/U2 version of Sgt. Pepper's, the Live 8 opener from Hyde Park. That was only because it was download only and for charity too.

I'm in Australia so iTMS has nothing to do with me purchasing iPods ;)

Another Aussie here... and as most people know in these forums...
we still don't have iTMS... but we do have great sales for iPods!

not only do we have solid iPod sales.. but also solid music sales... especially given our population.

iPods are bought for lots of reasons... even before there were any iTMS's around the world.

What a bitch it will be if Steve Jobs stands up on 12th October and everybody in the room gets excited about the iPod AV and he simply announces the iTMS Australia. ;)

I agree with rickvanr. It's iTunes that makes the system work so well, not the iTMS nor the iPod per se. I bought an iBook first and then an iPod to see what all the fuss is about.

Oh yeah, and chuck me in with the other Aussies who are still all patiently awaiting the local iTMS like a killer duck, waiting for its prey in the rushes.

This is exactly why I asked about iTMS rather than iTunes. My thoughts are that the iPod an iTunes may be a good enough combo to be successful without the dominance of the iTMS. If true, this weakens the music industry's bargaining power when it comes to iTMS pricing.

As much as I'd like to wish this might be the case...
Aust isn't big enough in either Apple's or America's eyes to announce such a high profile media event over there

But at the end of the day that isn't the reason why we don't have ITMS. It's because the greedy record executives are haggling over the cost, something that Jobs eluded to recently.

I'm sure Apple would love to have ITMS here in Australia because they realise Australia is a lucrative market despite the fact we are not an over crowded country.

Yeah, we have a pretty good level of disposable income and most of us are pissed off at paying so much for CD's.

Oh, and sucked in Yankees.
