They could be taking payment only by credit card for the reason that if you DO NOT activate the phone within 30 days they will charge you for the full price of the phone.

ATT is taking a risk with the subsidized price, and they want o make sure everyone buying a phone is signing a contract.

Taking payment via CC is the best. I love my Amex as you can tell with the extra protection. If you use your Citibank credit card, you can generate an one time charge with a max. If Apple tries to charge the same CC number again, it will get rejected. Citibank is on your side.

here's what you do when you lose/break your 3G:

Find a good deal on a 2G on eBay (or on this forum), change your data plan to the 2G plan, then go into ATT/Apple as a "2G iPhone user" and get your subsidized 3G phone. Then sell the 2G for what you paid for it (or more if it was a super deal).

Make sense?

that might be the best way

If you purchase your iphone 3g iphone using your Amex Card, it is cover within 90 days against theft. All you need (if it is stolen), is a police report and proof of purchase, Amex will refund your money back, full amount including tax.

My regular iphone was stolen 2 months after purchase. Somebody broke into my car and took my ipod and iphone. I filed a police report, call Amex, got my money in 4 business days.

I don't think people had a problem with what the first one cost, it was if AT&T will sell them a 2nd subsidized iPhone within 90 days (aka less than 18 months) that is a question mark.

Fine and dandy to get $215 dollars back in 4 days, but will the 2nd one cost you $215 or $430.

The problem is that your insurance or AMEX won't cover the cost to replace the phone. Mine got stolen and yes AMEX will cover it the problem is it covers what i paid not what it will cost me to replace it (an extra $200).

Several of you have suggested what Apple charges for a replacement phone, but does anyone know for a fact what it costs for a replacement phone? Asfar as selling it on eBay and reporting it stolen - every iPhone has a serial number and when your legitimate buyer goes to register it, AT&T will likely ask them who they bought the phone from (especially if the phone was reportedas lost/stolen). When Amex reimbursed you, they likely called the merchant (AT&T), and I'm sure they told the merchant they would receive a reward if they suspect fraud and could help recover some of the cost. It's not worth the risk today in the age of computers. It will end up on your credit report also.

The BIG difference is that no other phone makes you sign a two year agreement when you buy it. That is a big difference, and one not covered by any insurance.

It's funny that most of the adds I see for phones have a price listed and then a little "*" that says with a new 2-year activation.

Seems to be pretty common to me to require a 2 year contract.

I have mine insured through my homeowners insurance for $30 a year. Covers everything.

Whats stoping people that do this from just reselling 3gs on ebay

What if you break/lose your iPhone 3g ??? in 30 days or after ??? Can you buy it again for the same price or what ???

Hope you bought it with AMEX or a credit card that covers accidental damage or theft within the first 90 days.

Call your credit card company regarding it. If you are in good standings, you may get lucky and they will replace it for you.

That would help, but not completely: If you lost your iPhone 3G, I presume Amex would refund the money you paid. However, that would not be enough to buy a full-price replacement so you would still be out of pocket.

In the UK, you can get full insurance on the iPhone through O2 (or Carphone Warehouse if you want to pay their more expensive prices), and this covers you for a replacement iPhone for any loss or damage (including water damage).
