I was wanting to get a Samsung Galaxy S7 to use as my backup phone in case anything were to happen to my 6S, and also to play around with and see how much android has changed throughout the years, but they are expensive to buy outright.

What is a good but affordable android phone that I can buy and just mess around with and if need be, possibly switch over at a later time?

Carrier versions are usually cheaper than unlocked if you want to go that route, otherwise there's some good deals on unlocked ones.

Nexus 5x, Nexus 5, Nexus 6 are all good choices, Moto X Pure, One Plus phones, etc also easy on the wallet at this point.

Of course, that's used devices. Outright there are some cheap BLU phones that are ok for a backup but if you're looking for flagship stuff from this year it'll be more expensive. Personally I'm using the HTC 10 and love every bit of it.

you can grab this Nexus 6p deal. I'd say go with a Nexus device so you can run the latest Android offerings and/or customize with custom roms, root, etc.

I picked up a Nexus 6 on a $190 deal a month ago and love it! I've owned several dozen android phones over the years but still prefer iOS as my daily driver. I picked this up to tinker with and love it! and Android N is quite nice on it.

Otherwise, as BrettApple mentioned, check out Swappa and you can usually get good deals on used phones.

lower priced phones right now that I wouldn't mind trying are the OnePlus 3, ZTE Axon 7, and HTC 10.

For sure wouldn't buy a $800 phone new as backup. Plus Touchwiz won't be a great showcase for Android changes (depending on what you are looking for).

One Plus 3 would get my vote right now:

And as stated above, Nexus 6P/5X deals will be flying all around with the new version coming. And you will get Nougat right now.

Get the Moto G Plus over the G, better camera and has a finger print scanner. The Nexus 5x can be had used for $200 or so and you can get a Nexus 6p for a little over $300 used

I am pretty sure the Moto X Pure is still on sale at Best Buy. If so, that is my recommendation.
