Sounds like a desperate need for some Kentucky Fried Chicken while waiting for your 10.6 install.
 
Macs version of the blue screen of death, usually caused by a hardware/driver malfunction (same with Windows). It darkens the screen and shows a box with several languages saying "you need to restart your computer"
