I'm looking for work at the moment (graphic design) and I have been recommended to a company that are advertising for an 'overprint' designer. But I have never heard of an overprint designer.

The position is for a large multinational company and will primarily be working on internal documents, catalogues etc. Which is not a problem for me.

However I am reluctant to go for the position (even though I am getting quite desperate now) because I'm guessing its not a creative position at all and with weird job titles etc they kind of seem to operate in there own little world and don't conform to industry standard graphics techniques. You know like Printing.com that insist on naming everything differently and so cause confusion to the customer then blame the customer for not art working correctly when infact it is.

So what is an overprint designer or is it a weird made up title from a company naive to graphics standards?

I suspect, but may be wrong, that the term applies to someone who will be doing artwork to go over existing preprinted work, whether it's templates, colouring work up etc. Unlikely to be a creative's position at all.

Would it do any harm to contact them and ask more details about the position beforehand?

Thanks BV from the advert it does seem like it might be something along those lines. I think I'll give it a miss. ;)

I'd agree with Blue Velvet, it sounds like you'll be doing work over existing work/images - it sounds like adding a flock (iirc thats what its called - the fine fluffy texture on wallpapers etc), drawing over or something similar to a flat piece of work for example.

Although I would agree that contacting the company may be the best approach.

Well I know the pay is crap too so if the job is even crappier then I'm not going to waste my time, even though I need to find something very sharpish. :(

Not sure if im allowed to ask this on MR (delete if not) but if anyone knows if there is a design vacancy going in Yorkshire PM me.

My portfolio can be found here if you may be hiring yourself.

May not be important anymore, but they're probably TRYING to hire a prepress technician who can take a design and make sure the overprints translate correctly on film or plates.

Yes, it sounds to me like they are looking for pre-press person to pre-flight doc's, Trapping making sure spot colors separate ect.
Would give you a good foundation in building doc's correctly, while looking for a real design job.
Nice to be able to eat.

    Job Description

I am the Design & Production Manager who has advertised the post above.
We are a half billion pound turnover company specialising in the office product wholesale market. We have a large in-house design team consisting of 20 designers.
We design and produce a multitude of brochures and advertising literature ranging from Direct Mail to Corporate Brochures to POS. The work is varied and the opportunities are many.
the 'wierd job generated within our own little world' consists of a large degree of Adobe Illustrator work which overprints as a fifth black onto pre printed CMYK brochures, (designed by ourselves) bespoking them for our customers.
The pay reflects the level of experience needed for this position, opportunities often arise within the department allowing experienced individuals to move up the ladder and take on more senior and design led roles if they so desire.
We also have a large pre press department.
There is a fair proportion of the job requiring design work, however I do not require anybody above their station.

It can only be the other week that I was sure that the Attik (Leeds) and DED Ass were recruiting.

Have you tried doing a local search on Mad?
