Why do people do this? I'm not sure what it is either - is it so older threads get more views or something?

It's making a semi-pointless post so that the thread goes back up to the top in new posts, forum spy and in the forum category itself. It's essentially a "look here" cry and it is against the rules. Of course one can bump a thread with a post that has something of value to add to the conversation.
