What is .fcpcache and can I empty it?

[I am Swift]

I have 2 .fcpcache files from FCPX on my external hard drive both over 200 GBs. What happens if I empty/delete the files? Running out of room and need to make space on this hard drive. Any help is greatly appreciated!
