The thick of it
For several years, I've had Pinball Arcade for Mac. The console versions of the game look awesome, as if you're standing in a darkened arcade playing a real pinball machine. The Mac versions on the other hand look like a cartoon, with no realistic lighting. There's also a glitch where the game repeatedly goes into slow motion at regular intervals. Farsight (the game's creator) claims it's a problem with the way Macs handle graphics.

I also have Trainz, the railroad simulation. Again, other versions of the game look spectacular. The Mac version looks like a cartoon with lots of graphics glitches and poor framerate. The company has said that it's a problem with how Macs handle graphics.

I'm using a new Mac Pro, so I've got decent hardware. Does anyone have thoughts on what's going on? Are the App companies simply blowing smoke about the graphics issues? I had thought that with Metal for Macs, we'd finally see games to rival console versions. The hardware is more than capable. It has to be a software issue. But where do you think the problem is -- with the OS or the App itself?

You hit the nail on the head... they're blowing smoke. And it's not only with games, as I've seen the same lame excuses from developers of other apps. Anytime a developer ports a Windows game or other app to OS X and doesn't re-write it for the Mac, you wind up with lousy performance and poor graphics. :(
