Panic developer Cabel Sasser noticed a strange bug in the iTunes App Store this evening. As part of the hardware requirements on several new apps, a placeholder name "ix.Mac.MarketingName" has appeared on several apps' iTunes listings.

The listing appears on Panic's new universal SSH client for iOS called Prompt [App Store] which appeared in the App Store this evening as well as many other Universal apps in the App Store.

It's clearly a glitch that will be corrected quickly, but it's led some to speculate that it's a placeholder for another unknown device.

Article Link: What is ix.Mac.MarketingName?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8G4 Safari/6533.18.5)

I am going with either universal apps for iOS and Mac or appletv. Nothing else makes sense.

Maybe a sign of universal iOS+Mac apps?

It wouldn't be too difficult for Apple to provide something like Rosetta for iDevice apps. It sounds extremely un-apple though. The only reason Apple provided Rosetta was to ease the PowerPC-Intel transition. I don't think there is any real benefit here because many iDevice apps would not translate well to a mouse and keyboard. It's possible that new iOS apps would have a "mac mode" that would solve this, so who knows.

In the App Store

Just purchased an app on the ITMS, and it said Requirements: Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and ix.Mac.MarketingName.

Duh, I can't believe some of the comments there...

Probably iAds?
No, it has to be a) a device (it's a app requirement list!) and b) something that runs iOS 3.0+.

Could it be the Mac App Store?
See above.

apps for macs………..
WTF? What's that? Anyway, see above.

As for guesses for iPhone 5, no, that one's already covered by the "iPhone and iOS 3.0 or later" in that list. Same for iPod Touch, and iPad revisions.

My only guess right now is Apple TV.

Edit: Some here speculate in an iOS + OS X merge, and I guess that *could* happen. That could be compatible with iOS 3.0 and fit that list. Perhaps it's the biggest surprise Apple is holding back for OS X Lion. I still think a new revision of Apple TV is more likely though, since it already runs iOS.

iX as iMac,iPhone,iSomething - or as Roman numerals IX = 9?

So, iX.Mac.MarketingName or 9.Mac.MarketingName? Is OS X Lion ninth in someway?

iOS, iX, ...

"iX" = "Ix", which is the nickname for the character Ford Prefect in the book "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy".

Obviously, the new Apple device is either a digital watch or a towel.

It could be apps for AppleTV. I think there have been some clues of the xMac though. Mac is in the name here. AMD GPU drivers have been added to OS X. But the problem is it seems the market is headed elsewhere.

Its probably apple TV yep

But, the imac is due a refresh. Imac touch with ios apps as widgets?

SSH Term Pro

The same is seen for the app SSH Term Pro

edit: and VNC Viewer, Desktop Connect and other apps in this category

^^^ You should install those updates ;)

Ha ha ha, I was actually installing them as I took the screenshot. No updates to do now ;)

Actually I reckon this product name is a code name for a virtual iOS machine for Mac devices enabling iOS apps on Macs.

Saying that, its also likely a 'split off for iPad 2', the reason I think that? Well, iBooks also has that product name. AppleTV would be lousy for book reading IMO. Perhaps some apps will only work on iPad2 and not on iPad(1), due to processor requirements or camera, for example, hence split the compatible apps into two categories. If so, why are games like Angry Birds HD not showing up, which are compatible for both?

Thats why I thought the Virtual iOS software for Mac is more likely, book publishers might want to see how their book looks like in iBooks

Once you get over the delusion of Macs running iOS apps, the Apple TV 2 makes the most sense.
