One thing I haven't heard much about is what's coming to Apple TV with the new OS? Any new and exciting features, or is it mostly just a compatibility upgrade?

Why do you think the ATV2 will even get iOS5?

ATV1 didn't move to Leopard or Snow Leopard, did it? It stayed on Tiger.

I should have worded better. I'm asking based on this. Whether it gets iOS 5 or simply just a software update to the current version.

Does the current version have tv show and movie purchases and Vimeo? If so, it looks like it'll just be AirPlay mirroring...

Maybe because there's been an Apple TV iOS 5 developer beta since the iOS 5 announcement.

So far, it gets Photo stream, AirPlay mirroring and a few new screen savers that I've noticed.

I do wonder if the current Apple TV iOS 5 beta has a placeholder UI until something new is announced. Currently, it places Photo stream at the very bottom of the "Internet" category. That's not exactly a prime location for a much touted feature.
