I have the 3GS with wifi off, 3g on, bluetooth off, location on. I typically get about 5 hours of actual usage daily, is that normal or is it worth returning?

There's no way anyone can tell for sure because we don't know what you're doing, screen settings, what apps you are or are not using. There are several threads you can go to which have various scenarios from people that have already posted.

normal usage, I don't play games, maybe 20 minutes or so a day, check this site once an hour for 5 minutes or so, don't call more that 20 minutes a day,y= and brightness is set to the middle with auto on, Im not looking for a definate answer, just curious if this seems in the right ballpark, about 5 hours a day

Yeah that's fine.

Today, I listened to some music, browsed on wifi and 3G, used Google Maps, texted, made a few phone calls, used a few different apps and I have:

Usage: 2 hours, 11 minutes
Standby: 8 hours, 27 minutes

73% battery left

If by "all these problems" you mean a bunch of people on here complaining then you need to have perspective. This is a forum which thrives on people complaining - not complimenting. That's not meant as an insult - but the truth is - out of the million iphone 3gs that were bought, a small percentage are bound to have some anomaly. Posters here are not the average users and many are power users.

In short - the threads on here aren't, in my opinion, the NORM but the exception

There's a lot of threads around these parts related to battery issues. The 3GS has a better battery than the 3G -- just look around, you'll see.

So far today -

Some minor app use - a 24 minute call
Bluetooth on

Usage: 42 min
Standby: 5 hours 32 min

85% battery left

This is my first iphone - I really don't know what to expect. So far, I have charged it up overnight each night.

Whether I'm using it less, the battery is broken in or a problem app has been fixed or removed my battery is just fine. Icould get by with charging every other day like my 2g. If I have push onthen every night.

Usage is really hard to define. 5 hours though and like 18+ hours standby is probably typical.

OK - today, traveling in and out of service areas - I got:

Usage: 3 hours 43 minutes
Standby: 13 hours 51 minutes

And down to 4% battery before I charged.

Is that normal?

Yes, if your phone was having to search for service all day.
