What is Safari Safe Browsing Data

When I sync my iPhones and iPad2 to iTunes, there is something called Safari Safe Browsing data (or something close to this) which is copied each time. What is it? Do I need it? Can I turn it off if I don't need it?

This database, provided by Google, is used by mobile Safari to check for known malicious web sites.
