I use mac and windows, but for most of my work I need windows because of the programs that only run in windows.

I had always thought that in terms of raw performance, benchmarking etc for media related workflow, so for things like video editing, photoshop that macs were always superior in performance.

But recently with the high core count and lower prices on PC, I keep on hearing that Windows is actually performing better than macs and for less price?

Now I don't have a choice because of the programs I use, but if people are saying windows offers better performance for less cost, what is stopping you from using Windows?

Will you consider switching?

The two main things that stop me from using Winblows as my daily driver (other than the UI) are:

1) That Microsoft seems to think that it's a good idea to kick off an OS update right in the middle of when I'm working on some important things that should not be interrupted.

2) That Microsoft currently has even worse QA than Apple (which I didn't think was possible) so with every update they break something important or decide that I really didn't want those files I had in Documents and deletes them.

Which is why I only run Win 10 in a VM and backup often and do all my real work in High Sierra.

That Windroid universe does not appeal to me for privacy and security reasons.

My work machines have only ever been Windows, but I don't pay the overhead for IT support.

At the moment, I'm on one of the PCs in my office. 15 minutes ago, while trying to open an email - it froze. Could not close it in task manager. Had to shut down the entire machine.
Things like this....
That don't often happen on the Macs.

I stopped using Windows back in 2006 when an automatic CHKDSK at boot tried to clean up 72GB out of my 40GB hard drive. It wiped itself out in the process, and I built myself a hackintosh within a week and never looked back.

I get tempted towards Windows, but fortunately that is never for work, it is just for the gaming ecosystem. I might build myself a modest gaming rig to complement my working Mac (today) - a MacBook Air 2017 someday.

My work does not require specialised software that might be exclusive to either Windows or macOS. However, macOS is more suited to my modest requirements for earning a livelihood.

1. unix based os - if i'm not using a unix-based os i feel confused, irritated, and generally unpleasant
2. personally prefer macOS experience to windows

wsl is interesting, but honestly i'm not at a point where i have the time to learn something new

BLOATWARE. Every windows machine comes loaded with ads and software trying to upsell me at every turn. Agree on security issues also.

The nagware also drives me crazy in Windows, but each macOS iteration seems to bring more and more unwelcome "notifications" into my workflow that I have to do homework to figure out how to get rid of it.

Lately, I use mainly my Windows Laptop. The reason was/is simple, I need/ed to use a software and the specs of my MacBook Air were not enough (RAM, SSD). It took me almost a week to "personalize" Windows, to make it just work. When I was finally done, came the problems with certain drivers (Synaptics etc.) that were updated, but not functioning properly. Another week to find solutions...

It's a different world. Not always to my liking, to put it mildly.

I've grown up with the Mac product line since the late 1970s. I know it as well as the back of my hand. When they switch over to having an underlying UNIX OS I was elated as at my workplace we used UNIX on our big mainframes.

I've used Windows at times and quite honestly do not feel comfortable as I do using the macOS. Also, the recent hacking and virus infiltration seems to be far more prevalent on the PC running windows. So many of my friends who had been running PC and Windows were infected with viruses that simply took their systems down and made them practically impossible to use. Many have since switched over to the Apple product lines because of this.

My whole family is Apple-based so communications between us in a digital sense works seamlessly.

We do not see the extra cost of the Apple products as an impediment at all. We, in general like the designs of the Macs and they have had long lives without too much issues with hardware failing. We all carry AppleCare+ with the Macs and the help we get from Apple is 2nd to none in our opinion.

We all love the Apple Store and the help and advice we receive there.

By and large all the Apple bundled Applications run smoothly. However, they aren't bug free but still get the work done nonetheless.

As far as performance goes, only my son and I care about this aspect. All other family members concerns surround just using the Applications and so long as they run and perform as they should, they're happy.

I would agree that the performance between PC/Windows and the Macs is similar and that the PC products are in general cheaper, but that is not enough to persuade any of us the switch to a PC base. Basically there's no overriding reason to switch.... we are happy campers using the Macs.

No sense of style or minimalism at all. I had to sit down at my colleagues windows machine the other day, and when I fired up the start menu all I saw was Netflix, sport news, Candy Crush, Xbox, etc. This was a newly installed corporate win10 machine!

I like ecosystems. I like when my phone, watch, iPad, computer, HomePod, and TV all sync with each other. Microsoft has none of this. I like their office apps, but I have no use for office.

****** 3rd party apps. No platform has 3rd party apps like the Apple platform. Because Apple users are known to pay more for software.

****** devices. There’s no tablet like the iPad Pro. So my tablet will still run iPadOS. I love having the same apps on all my devices.

I left Windows during the Vista debacle. Vista was, by far, the worst computer experience I've ever had. Imagine the worst operating system you can, multiply that by 100, and you had Vista.

Switching to Mac saved my business, and it has been amazing ever since (although, as someone pointed out, the notifications and security hoops you have to jump through are starting to get a little over the top).

Moreover, in addition to the ecosystem, I'm on a computer all day long, and much of that is navigating the OS UI. I want something nice and well designed to look at.

Although I'm a serious windows user, I both use Windows PC and Mac.
The most compelling reason for me to use Mac are this:
1) Mac has more personnal feel to it (seamless integration with icloud and Apple mobile devices) I love to manage my personal information, pictures, videos, and other itunes contents with Mac. There's icloud and itunes for windows, but it doesn't feel well implemented.
2) Mac's UI scaling with retina is much better than Windows
3) I prefer to separate a horsepower working computer and my personal one hence all my personal computers are Mac.

The reasons I keep using a PC.
1) Modular and customization. a spiritual successor to 5,1 would have solved this, but Apple's abandoned me. And no. I'm not going to spend 6k for 8core 580 graphic.
2) Windows offer versatile software options, and with no option of a decent headless mac, this option out-value possibility of ditching Windows.
3) PC is only side that offers 4k UHD laptops.

I don't know if I'd switch but I'm open to building a Windows desktop to go with my Apples. (Mac user personally since... 2001-2? Bought a Power Mac G4 with a student loan for graphic design. I had towers until the first 27" 5K iMac.)

Windows 10 is only marginally more annoying to me than OS X now - I've always had to kill all the handoff/message/FaceTime/widget/notifications/etc. stuff Apple packs in since they first started appearing. I want the simplest, cleanest, most get out of my way UI possible, that's why I went into debt to get a Mac back in the day. My biggest extra frustration with Windows now is the muscle memory of having used OS X for so long.

I agree. The reason I separate a heavy cruching machine with my personal one is to avoid those annoying pop-ups, notifications, and phone messages in my heavy-duty machine. I disable all the notification and try to make it clean as much as possible.

However, those annoying things are welcome most of the time when using it only as my personal den. So I separate.

1. Prores
2. Malware/Viruses
3. FCPX (though barely, as I'm mostly using Davinci Resolve these days)
4. Every brief encounter I have with Windows these days I'm shocked by how inelegant the UI has become (I still think Windows 2000 has a far more elegant and intuitive UI than anything Apple have ever done, and I don't know how Windows has managed to fall so far from that clean, simple, and wonderfully easy to use layout that they'd already perfected)

For me, as someone who started on PCs and moved to Mac after university, I've never really seen any significant differences in reliability or frustrations between the two worlds - both manage to piss me off consistently.

I'm finding it harder and harder to justify staying with Macintosh given how limited the number of programs I actually use are (it's really just Davinci, Photoshop, Microsoft Office and a little bit of FCPX now and then, and the rest of it is basically web browsing).

But Mac is still the standard for Film/TV here in Australia, so that plays a small part in it. And habit is another thing keeping me here.

Now that we finally have a new Mac Pro I'll have to make the decision at some point. I suspect I'll probably take the path of least resistance and pay the Apple Tax simply so that I won't have to learn anything new. Laziness is a powerful motivator sometimes.

But then again, so is saving yourself $5,000-6,000.

My 2p:

First 6 months: Mac is slower. Both machines work. Installing software on Windows machine harder.
Next Year: Windows machine speed advantage starts to erode due to diagnosing nagging problems. Software installation gets more finicky in Win.
Next Year: Windows machine gets thrown out window (pun intended) as all time spent on impossible system upgrades and software incompatibility.

So if your Windows machine is from work and there is an IT professional there to keep it running/synced, then it's perfectly fine. For home use? Mac.

Windows takes much more maintenance and even then I’m ready to throw in towel and reinstall after 2-3 years. Having a clone helps to restore more quickly. Let the kiddo go a few months without checking up and it was spyware city. That’s with programs set up to catch it.

Mac can be hard at first as there’s a bit of a learning curve but stays smooth. Can run most windows stuff that I want in parallels. So I get both worlds. Can reboot into windows for games.

Much is dependent on user. At least the kids know how to do both.

Windows permits you to define Active Hours which prevents Windows from restarting the device during those hours. Downloads and installation of updates occurs in the background which shouldn't interfere with your use of the system.

Using a PC can offer more performance at a lower cost depending on circumstances.

When people claim PCs are less costly than Macs they're referring to the fact there are PCs which cost less than any Mac but they're not comparable in specifications. Typically spec for spec Macs hold their own against PCs (however there are always exceptions). Macs are typically considered overpriced when someone doesn't need the higher specs available in even Apple's entry level systems. They're "forced" to over pay for something they really don't need.

For most purposes I think comparable Macs and PCs are competitive with one another. Enough so that, unless you need the utmost in performance, other factors take precedence. For those instances where absolute performance is necessary one should benchmark their applications on both platforms. Merely looking at specs isn't enough.

What maintenance does Windows require? I've been using the same installation of Windows for years and haven't had to do any maintenance. May I suggest if you're doing maintenance then stop! Leave it alone.

Not every Windows system.

You can paint as pretty a picture as you want with Windows but there is one major thing Apple products have that Windows lacks; seamless integration between desktop, mobile and wearable devices

I will not consider switching until Microsoft solves this problem.
