What is the A9 chip and who makes it?

When I think of CPU's I think of Intel and AMD. The A9 is a bit of a mystery to me. What is it? What's its history and who manufactures it?

Just wanted to know more about ARM before is becomes the only CPU Apple uses in all of its products (Intel is loosing favor and AMD chips are a hasbeen).
