I have a couple of hundreds movies and clips, and I'm looking for a good software FOR WINDOWS AND FOR MAC (best if free but not mandatory) that can scan my hard drive for these which are in different video file formats, index and download any additional info about each one.

Do I install it on the pc or external harddrive?

I do not want to have these many videos being copied to my internal disk.

You install the software on your PC (or Mac) and it will scan whatever drive you point at it. It won't copy any of the videos to your internal drive. Plex won't change the files at all, but you can access the Plex library on any device and the videos will be nicely cataloged.

thanks. i have used plex before but using an internal harddrive.
was not sure if i would win with a USB external drive with concern of it coping files back to pc
