If I reset my phone and restore it from a backup, will it also pull all my iMessages?

I'd rather not use a third party app to backup my text messages.

Doesn't iTunes and iCloud backup your messages? I normally get all my text messages back when I restore from my iTunes backup.
This. I'm still using the restored backup that started with the original iPhone so my messages go all the way back to 2008.

When I restored an iPad (that I hadn't used before) using a backup from my iPhone, I didn't get any messages on the iPad. Any ideas why?

Because older iOS for iPad versions didn't have iMessage and I guess Apple just never bothered to add restoring messages from iPhone to iPad when they released the iMessage feature on the iPad.

I don't think there is any 3rd party apps that backup and restore back texts and iMessages.
Only iTunes backup and iCloud backup would do that.
I usually clear them out every few months. I don't save years of conversations.
