What is the compass FOR?!

make sure that you wait for the phone to locate you (giving the blue dot) and then press the button in the bottom again. if you press it too close together successively it may just be canceling the locate feature
The compass is a cool feature but I doubt anyone would really use it that often. You can't use it in the car because the engine generates a magnetic field that disables it, and the sun can tell you which direction you're facing if you know it rises/sets in the east/west. But of course I'm saying this because I'm a 3G owner, but it wouldn't be one of those apps that I have on my first 3 pages. Nevertheless, it's still the best phone on the market, but I know that'll change in a year.
The compass almost makes Google Maps useless inside a car if you enable it. The map reorients erratically.

the compass does not get disabled when using it in a car.
and from what I understand - the compass will be used in future programming for games/etc which orientation is important.
Not that I'm a gamer. But the concept is cool to rotate a viewpoint based on where I'm standing...
