What is the difference between AppleCare and AppleCare+ for Macs?
And how long am I eligible for each of the above options since the purchase date of the mac?
If my mac is already under the AppleCare, can I get AppleCare+ then?

I don't think you can get AppleCare for the Mac anymore. Looks like AppleCare+ replaces AppleCare, with the difference in coverage being that AppleCare+ for Macs covers physical damage (with an addition service fee), whereas AppleCare didn't.

If you already have AppleCare, I don't see where you can upgrade to AppleCare+.

Looks like you can now only add AppleCare+ within 60 days of buying a Mac.

Thanks for the reply!

If a yellow color caution mark appears before the "Eligible for AppleCare" text as in the below image, does that mean that I'm no longer eligible for the AppleCare?

With the old AppleCare, you could add it up to a year after you purchased your Mac (although it backdates your coverage to start on your original purchase date). So if you purchased your Mac before AppleCare+ came out in July, I'd guess you might have the option to add AppleCare?

I'd try clicking the "Click to learn more" link in your screenshot above and see what it says.

Where on that page does "Eligible for an AppleCare product", somehow change to "No longer eligible..." :D

I would also "Click to learn more"

How long ago did you purchase your new iMac?

AppleCare+ for iOS with accidental damage coverage has now replaced AppleCare globally but as mentioned above AppleCare+ for Mac is only available in Japan and the USA.

Standard AppleCare extends the one year warranty for Macs to three years and can be registered at any time within the first year from the date of purchase.

AppleCare+ also extends the warranty from one to three years but adds up to two incidents of accidental damage (service fee of $99 for screen damage or external enclosure damage, or $299 for other damage plus tax)

In the USA you have 60 days from the date of purchase to add AppleCare+ and in Japan only 30 days.

The standard AppleCare plan can still be applied to the 2017 iMac in Japan and the USA by calling Apple. In those places it can no longer be registered over the Internet.

I bought a copy of the old AppleCare plan on Amazon from a third party seller and registered it on my 2017 iMac here in Japan by telephone. For me, the standard AppleCare is more than sufficient for my iMac which never moves from its desk. I don't need accidental damage coverage. YMMV. In Japan and the USA, Apple no longer sells the standard AppleCare plan so if you're in one of those places finding a copy may be the bigger problem. Online retailers like LA Computer and B&H used to sell it but apparently no longer do as stock has run out. I recommend NEVER buying AppleCare serial numbers on eBay. If you can find a shrink-wrapped unused product there then it's probably fine.

See this thread for more details.

Where are people still finding boxed copies of AppleCare? No luck at any authorized dealer...

The advantage of AppleCare+ is great, but alas is not available world wide. Restricted to US and Japan last time I looked, certainly not Down Under.

For anyone interested, it's available in the UK as well
