What is the equivalent free program of MS paint with Mac OS X?

There's an Appleworks 6 for Mac OS X... I'm using it right now.

Yeah I always used Paint on Windows XP as a quick-lauching way of creating avatars, annotating photos with circles and scribbles etc. - I thought it was an outrage that Preview didn't have an "Adjust size by percentage" until LEOPARD! Yet there is still no way to simply add a red circle to something (e.g. pointing out something I took on a photo to post on a forum).. I am stuck with hunting through MacRumors and Google for suitable apps to do that simple task!

Try Paintbrush. Nice and simple drawing app, but not as advanced (I think) as MS Paint. Close to it tho...
