EDIT: thanks to theSeb, below is the chart showing the exact graphic card models that will be in the new imac.

Note there is a SIGNIFICANT performance difference between the default GTX 675MX on the imac 27" High config vs the BTO config GTX 680MX.

If you are already spending this amount of $$ getting the 27" High config, definitely go with the 680MX upgrade.

640m is baseline used in 21.5 inch.
660m is baseline used in 27 inch.

BTO options are not known yet as the store isn't up. I'm assuming you'll be able to get up to a 670/680 for the totl option.

I'd consider upgrading for that, but my late 09 iMac's worth is diminishing so much now!

that is terrible! just terrible...those are much worse than 6970m from TWO YEARS ago. I hope their bto option is a GTX 680M to at least stand on par with the current market performance.

Otherwise this is a complete fail, when they released 6970M in the imac it was market leading and far ahead of any other all-in-ones. What happened to apple....

Base 21.5" GT 640M
Base 27" GTX 660m

If I had to guess I would say that the higher end 21.5" will offer the GTX 660m and the higher end 27" will offer possibily a GTX 680.

Indeed. They are too obsessed with making the products thin. They are so obsessed they are actually weakening products.

I am anticipating BTO options as well. A 680M might just be the compelling upgrade from my current late 2009 iMac.

if you have a 6970m only the gtx 680m is somewhat worth to upgrade, if it's just gt 680m it's not worse it at all unless you need the extra cpu cycles (most people dont) or want the thin design...

exactly! who gives a flying ____ if a DESKTOP computer that sits on your...DESK is a few inches thinner. It's not a laptop, nor an ipad. You dont lug your imac with you everyday.

This is completely retarded, i rather it's a few more inches thicker than the older version but with a beefy video card inside.

640m+22% = 650m
650m+11% = 660m
660m+22% = 6970m (the current top model)
680m is about 6970x2

its a terrible mistake

Sounds like you're too concerned about gaming. In that case, spend less money and build your own box, and you can keep upgrading the gpu when the latest and greatest comes out.

No sane person gets an iMac primarily focusing on gpu performance.

I personally don't mind the thinner edges, and I don't mind losing the optical drive. I will mind if apple really jacks up the prices on their ssds, and makes them impossible to get to for user replacement.

The 640 is garbage for gaming. DDR3... I'm sure there will be upgrade options, but I'm not so sure if a 680M will be offered.

EDIT: 640M uses DDR5.

i do? many other people too? not all gamers like to have their desk look like the matrix movie. Nothing wrong with wanting a clean setup that can also perform.

Apple's old imac with the 6970m was superb when it was released, they should followed through and become the market leader again.

Apple Site is up (not yet the store)

High End 27"

Configurable to NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX with 2GB of GDDR5 memory.

Low End 27"

High End 21.5"

And the problem is you're comparing their totl bto 27 inch iMac with baseline models.
