Now that the dust is settled, i am actually very happy.

The gtx 680MX is on par or better than gtx 680M which is a good upgrade from 6970M and can run all games at max setting, so i am glad i didnt get another all-in-one and will be getting this coming dec.

All the lesser video card options may not be ideal but dont really care as long as their most powerful option is good, which is in this case.

Good job apple...

I agree! I just hope the new form factor can take the heat, literally speaking... :)

Apple has a history of calling a GPU one thing when, in fact, it is something else. Its probably an OC'd 680M in this case but it could be an OC'd 675MX.

Or you could just check the nVidia site: http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gtx-680mx/specifications

GPU Engine Specs:
1536CUDA Cores
720Processor Clock Tester(MHz)
92.2Texture Fill Rate (billion/sec)
Memory Specs:
2500 MHzMemory Clock
GDDR5Memory Interface
256-bitMemory Interface Width
160Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec)

(it's essentially a 680M with some more CUDA cores and faster GDDR5)

Did I miss memo I should be angry, or am I the only one that realized we're talking about an all-in-one 27' inch computer?

This may shock you but most people are fine with a computer that can handle graphics better than a 5 year old xbox 360 as long as they don't have to go back to a hassle that is a PC.

As one of those people who made the switch to apple only, I'm fine with dealing with a few less sparkles. Star Craft 2 played good enough on my macbook from 2009 and if I had to play the Witcher in high rather than ultra settings on these new macs I would be pretty floored.

Just the opinion from the millions who just like the experience outside of gaming, but still play from time to time.

Excellent. Let's hope that's what Apple has put in there. (it probably is but I just don't trust them anymore).

I can understand a bit of skepticism, but when in recent years have they specified vendor model X and delivered something else?

All of the video cards in Intel iMacs, for as long as I can remember, have been off-the-shelf OEM mobile parts. This has been especially true over the last 2-3 years with the AMD/ATI cards (iMacs) and nVidia cards (MacBooks).

I'm showing my age but HD2600 Pro which was a downclocked Mobility HD2600XT was the last time. I think the 8800GS may have been something else as well.

The amount of people who got "pwned" in this thread is awesome!

The 2 gig GTX 680 MX is beastly! How they fit it into THAT... is beyond me.

Only concern will be the heat dissipation.

Day one purchase.

I don't even understand how it's possible to engineer a computer like this.

Apple All-In-One desktops are now at least 9 months ahead of their competition - if not a full year.

Rant about this... rant about that... that's just... how it is and how it's gonna be for the near future.

This site will let you compare the two.
Right now, I've set it to GTX 680 vs Radeon HD 6770
Use the drop downs at the top to change this, and company any two cards.

Cheers.

It's possible the MX is a slightly down clocked version for heat management.

Nice comparison, but they are comparing the desktop versions and not the M or MX laptop versions. So not really apples-to-apples as one company might have scaled back the mobile version more than the other.

The MX is supposedly a ramped up M, but the M is a ramped down GTX.

THIS. I don't think a lot of people on this forum realize what Apple has just given us as an upgrade option.

The GTX 680 is currently considered the fastest single GPU card on the market right now. The 680MX is essentially a slightly down-clocked GTX680 desktop card. I have yet to find a single notebook that includes this card. I would almost argue that the 680MX is too much for an AIO.

A lot of people wonder if it will play games.....most definitely. While the iMac isn't sold as a 'gaming computer' I expect it to benchmark similar to a desktop equivalent with a GTX670.

See, there is something really important to consider, the GTX 680 MX is based on a desktop GTX 680, while the GTX 680M was based on the GTX 670 desktop card. This proves why there are more shaders and other components in the mx than the normal m. This basically translates into 20-30% increased performance than the 680m, so most of the games should play beautifully on the 1440p screen with very high details. We can expect around 50 fps in bf3 with every thing maxed out but anti aliasing set to zero( u wont need it on a screen with such high res), which is pretty great considering this is a Mac and an AIO! I'm very proud of this machine, for the first time I will consider buying an iMac for serious gaming!!!! I hope others love this machine as much as I do. Now the configuration with the 680mx and fusion drive, which will be preferable for gamers will probably cost around $2400 which I think is worth, considering the luscious screen and the high end components. I am truly in love!!!!!!

Sure enough, it appears the GTX 680MX (1536 CUDA cores w/ 720MHz core clock & 160GB/s memory bandwidth) is pretty much a downclocked desktop GTX 680 (1536 CUDA cores w/ 1006MHz core clock & 192.2GB/s memory bandwidth). This thing might actually come close to the performance of my quad-SLI GTX 295 PC. Nice.

Exactly.

Running a game like Guild Wars 2 on ULTRA settings will be silky smooth!

I think Apple DOES see a future for gaming on an AIO. This is the beginning of it... and I don't even game. (Well not on "PCs" anyway.)

I love it! Nailed it with the specs but would like to see how the heat dissipates on this beast first. Are all of those openings on the bottom for heat dissipation?

If so... is the real bonus here... a hand warmer at no extra charge???

;)

Yeah sure, it will be beastly when it comes out, but so will the price tag. In this day and age, spending somewhere in the region of 2.5 grands for a computer no matter how stellar it may be is ludicrous! The lower end models have relatively decent GPUs but Apple decided to cripple them with anaemic VRAMs!

Its great to see how well the GTX 680MX is going to be on the top end 27".

However...I'm not that technical into GPUs, but does anyone know about the top end 21.5" and how well the 650M will fare against last year's 6770M (on 2011 21.5")?

And considering screen sizes and the differences in resolutions, would the top end GTX 680MX (2GB) on the 27" running at native resolution still outdo a 650M running native on 21.5"?

Very curious...

although i think that this imac with the 680MX is SUPER expensive i like it that apple is finally stepping up and is offering an imac that can be used for gaming and deliver some serious performance :apple:

how does GTX 680MX compare to a desktop class GTX 670?
The GTX 680MX will actually give performance somewhere between a GTX 660ti and a 670 but more towards the latter side. If overclocked (possible on iMac due to larger psu) it may even reach GTX 670 level performance which is great even for the 2560 X 1440 res screen. The only issue arising in my mind is about the heat dissipation. The machine is super slim for such a high end one, which may affect the heating.

I am not into gaming a whole lot but might occasionally want to play one on the iMac, will they look decent at medium settings? Is it different if the game is something like Angry Birds would those run at full settings?

Generally speaking, games run at medium settings look good. At Ultra, your jaw drops at the level of detail, but at medium it's still very good and perfect playable. And of course the intensity of the game matters; casual games tend to have one setting, "works on lowest common denominator". You could run 36 copies of Angry Birds simultaneously and not have an issue.

Anyone have any idea about how much the BTO cost will be to get the 680M?

I'm guessing 675MX -> 680MX will be about $200.
