I used an iPhone SE 1st gen for just over four years, from 2018. I hope my 13 mini will last just as long, hopefully longer, since it is more modern from the start.

I got a first gen iPhone SE in March of 2018 as my first iPhone. I still haven’t found a reason for me to upgrade…

One small part of why I hang on to old phones/devices is that I tend to form attachments. I respect all the users who can let their phones go in that whole cycle of trade in/promotion or selling for $$$.

My wife and I ported to T-Mobile in 2015 and my greatest regret in that deal was letting go of an essentially brand new iPhone 6+. I had just had my 6+ replaced about two weeks before we ported (cracked screen) and this particular phone was perfect and solid. But off to T-Mobile it went. The only upshot was my 6s+ (which I got for trading it it) has been one of the most durable iPhones I've ever had.

But my attachments mean I end up skipping promos or trade ins and instead keep the phones. I know the device is a tool, but so are cars and some people have serious attachments to their cars (I don't). So I guess I see it that way.
The iPhone 6S Plus stood the test of time. The A9 and 2GB of RAM was a massive step forward for the iPhone. It aged very well. I know people who are still using 6S Plus and 7 Plus. The cameras are a big draw for me though, and the 13 Pro cameras are significantly better than even the XS, let alone any iPhone prior.

First iPhone was the 3GS — kept it and skipped the 4/4S years until I got the 5 (loved that form factor!).

Then (due to effective use of upgrade subsidies (RIP!) on a family plan) I had the 5/5S/6/6S.

Held the 6S until the 8 and held the 8 until the 12 mini.

With the mini apparently getting sunsetted after the 13, who knows how long I’ll hold onto my 12 mini.

just under 2 - that's when the contract expires and you get the itch for a new phone ! so next is iPhone 15 or iPhone flip (if it comes next year)

Usually about 2-2.5 years. Generally I upgrade once the contract's up and I can get a decent trade-in deal.

My 12 has been 'fine' but I've missed having the telephoto lens since replacing my 8+ with it, so I'm probably going to look at moving to a 14 Pro early next year.

Little embarrased to say that I’ve not had one longer than two years since the iPhone 4 (basically the last time I had a contract, been SIM only since then).
I did have the iPhone X for two years but two different phones (I was going to upgrade to a XS but didn’t so bought a secondhand X as I’d sold my first one).

I applaud anyone able to go more than 3 years before upgrading. That’s the longest I’ve gone between upgrades. By that time, I get tired of the same design and just want something new.

iPhone XR from when it was released so I think 4 years this autumn; hopefully with a battery replacement it’ll last me a bit longer too
Same here. This thing won't die, and it still looks new. It's crazy. I'm going to see what happens to the 13 mini prices next month and upgrade if they're still for sale.

iPhone 7 Jet Black bought in 2017 and still going! I’ll finally be upgrading to the 14 Pro on launch.
Very glad to know someone is using a jet black 7 daily still! My favourite iPhone. I still have mine and use it as a secondary/backup device. Never getting rid of it. It's scratched up but that's what makes it mine

iPhone 7 to 11 Pro - Jan 2017 till Sept 2019. only upgraded due to needing longer battery life even after new battery.
iPhone 11 Pro to 13 Pro - Sept 2019 till Jan 22.
Sold the 11 straight away but still got my trusty 7 jet black

For me it was the iPhone 4; that baby lasted me 6 years.

I recall the last 2 years of owning the iPhone 4 it was super slow within apps and the battery life sucked.

Still using my XS from June 2019–other than the battery wear on it and occasionally feeling let down by low light camera performance, not really much of a reason to go through paying off another phone

My first IPhone was the 6 plus. Upgraded every year with the Jump program until the XS Max then got the 12 Pro Max and now I’ve decided to skip the 14 Pro Max and get the 15 Pro Max with USB-C.

So, I went from every year to every 2-3 years.

I skipped the 11 series and as soon as I received my 12 Pro Max, I put myself on a 2 year upgrade cycle, so I’ll be upgrading to the 14 Pro Max.
