In October I bought the bottom-of-the-line mini and have never been happier (I just wish the fans didn't come on every time I launch GoogleEarth or YouTube or . . . . .)

Fans and YouTube is an Adobe Flash issue, it doesn't really matter how good your hardware is it always struggles and gets hot (requiring the fans) when playing back flash video after a while.

The way to fix this is for Adobe to write a flash video implementation for the Mac which is not so processor and resource intensive.

It's stupid that the same hardware which can play back a H.264 HD movie trailer without any problems can struggle with a tiny YouTube video.

New Mac mini!!

On X-mas Eve I finally bought myself a Mac mini 1.83 GHz Core 2 Duo, 1 GB RAM, 80GB HD OS X 10.5.1, new from a local Apple Store...it's awesome!!! I use it with a 22'' Samsung 225BW wide ratio LCD. The week before that, I picked up a used iBook 500MHz G3 and a 17'' 1 GHz iMac G4!!! All great machines!
But right now, I'm on my first Apple ever... my pride and joy, the one that got me hooked, my 400MHz G3 Grape iMac DV with 1 GB RAM and a 7,200 rpm 120 GB Seagate Barracuda HD running OS X 10.4.11.

Interesting. I didn't realize how much processor power a Youtube video required. I have a 700mhz iBook G3 (also my newest computer) and it can't play a Youtube video or a Windows Media clip without some serious skipping (Quicktime and VLC work fine though). Quite annoying for a computer that is otherwise pretty zippy for its age.

Yes, I've noticed youtube starts to smooth out on a minimum 500Mhz G4 Mac.
youtube does choke my G3's, but that's ok. I love all of my G3's!!

I'm running a 1.5GHz Digital Audio G4. I keep thinking I want a new Mac, but in reality it runs Tiger just fine, and nothing I do makes my G4 seem slow.

What type of 1.5GHz CPU do you have? Sounds nice! Even my 533MHz Digital Audio G4 runs plenty fast for all I do. I put in a Radeon 9000 Pro Mac Edition 128MB VRAM AGP graphic card which really boosts performance and gives the 533 CPU a break in processing video like youtube etc.

Current machine is a PowerMac DP 2.7 but the hula girl makes it faster.

First Mac was a graphite slot loading G3 iMac. Still have it. Fiancee wants it for her daycare and will probably work fine since kiddy games may run fine. Can't remember if it has 8MB or 16MB graphics memory. Eeesh.

It's a 7455B from OWC. I love it. I also have a flashed 256MB Nvidia 6200 installed. I don't do any heavy lifting with this machine (video, etc...), but for day to day tasks, including Photoshop - it's great.
