I was considering purchasing a 12 month subscription to NordVPN and am wondering if the browser plugin is as good as running the VPN at system level?

The reason I don't want to run it at system level is because of streaming on Spotify, Google Drive, having mail app open etc. I don't want the change of IP address to cause any problems logging in with these services. I am also a member of gambling sites and I am not sure how they would react if they saw I was using a VPN. With this in mind, I plan to use the VPN on something like Firefox for Netflix and streaming sites, and then use Chrome for regular browsing.

Any input is appreciated.

I don't know…but I use split tunneling with my PIA VPN app to achieve that. It's one of the reasons I chose the service.

For some reason the NordVPN app for macOS doesn't have that feature.

I had never heard of split tunneling before, but that seems like exactly it would do what I wanted. I'm guessing this is achieved with the PIA app?

PIA seems pretty cheap too. What is the PC / Mac Optimizer?

Yes. The PIA app has the split tunneling option.

I don't know what you mean by "What is the PC / Mac Optimizer?"

When I go to the signup page it mentions it.

I would not recommend NordVPN. I was looking for a good VPN service myself and dived deep into the topic. There is a lot of good information on reddit about it but you might have a good read here:

Many people are complaining about NordVPN, particularly regarding their difficult cancellation process and issues with continued billing even after cancellation. Additionally, there have been concerns raised after NordVPN changed their blog post from stating they would not comply with authorities to indicating that they will.

What are you trying so say?
Using a virtual private network (VPN) requires a great deal of trust. By using a VPN, you are entrusting them with all of your browsing and internet data. This means that they can see where you are connecting from, what you are doing online, and what you are downloading.

Personally, I have trust issues with any service that makes it difficult to cancel.

I tried Mullvad and IVPN. Both are very good. They both have very few differences. Mullvad is 5$ a month since forever. They don't have any free months or special deals for their service. It's 5 $. The servers are super fast here in Europe. The apps are working fine on iOS, Windows and MacOS. The bigger downside is that the apps on Windows and MacOS are Electron apps so they have the typical electron behavior. But you open them once a day or less so... You can use it on 5 devices.

IVPN has 2 tiers and you pay less if you buy a year in advance. The standard tier is 6$ a month, the pro tier is 9$ a month. The apps are better than the mullvad but the standard tier includes just 2 devices and has no port forwarding.

Both Mullvad and IVPN have fewer servers than any super big services like Nord but theoretically this helps your anonymity. Both have clean records regarding their data protection. They are testet once a year by 3rd party companies regarding their data protection and their record is flawless.
