Thanks for all the advice everyone! I found on Apple's website they do refurbished iPads (didn't know they did them) i never really trust refurbished, but they've got an iPad Mini 2 for $209. To me that seems very reasonable and still comes with a 1 year warranty.

Can anyone vouch for using a refurb?

not an ipad but i got my macbook pro 2015 refurb and no issues

Yes, I have bought iPad and Mac Mini refurbished directly from Apple. They usually end up coming in as good or better than new (since they tend to be more thoroughly tested).

I'm sure others will chime in with similar comments.

Agree. All the refurbs I've received from Apple were as good as new and you do have 1-year warranty in case there are issues.

Thanks everyone for all the input, I really appreciate it! We just ordered the iPad Mini 2 refurb off apples site. I think we'll be happy with it! Now just gotta find a kid proof case!

Oldest iPad to run iOS flawlessly has to be iPad Air 2. It has some serious CPU + GPU power under the hood. All other iPads before it were lame attempts. iPad 4 may come close 2nd.

Will it run iOS 11 ok ?

Air 1 64GB wifi is the one I have and runs iOS 10 pretty good. No need for me to upgrade soon.

I will go against everyone and let you know that Mini 2 may be a poor choice because it is already more than 3 year old (Nov 2013). It seems that Apple has abandoned minis because the size comes closer to 5.5" iPhone models.

Not relevant for a 20 month old kid, I think.

Apple has NOT abandoned the iPad Mini. They have come out with three 5.5" iPhone models and they're still selling the mini.

The mini 2 runs iOS 10 pretty well (not flawless, but still very well). This will be a machine for their 1 1/2 year old, so i don't think they will care about flawless performance.

This is true for my 20 month old son. No worries that it's that old. As long as it runs well and has the guided access capabilities. Anything is better than the Amazon Kindle Fire we had first

That's another reason why I picked it. I saw Apple is still promoting it for new on their website so I figure it still has current support.

Yup for my son so don't need flawless at all

I know adults who are perfectly satisfied using older model iPads. Do you really think that a 20 moth old baby/toddler is going to care?

And as has been discussed in another thread recently, there's no reason to suspect that Apple is done with iPad Minis. The larger iPhones have been available for 3 years now, and not only has Apple continued to update the Mini line in that time, data shows that they have been selling as well or better than the larger iPads.
