I'm sure they will have 34 separate SKUs for each of the combinations on their website. That said, they will likely sell replacement straps at some point since leather wears out over time and stainless steel can corrode or break.

Honest, I think this would be far easier for Apple, and far better for customers.

Think of it like iPads or iPhone and cases.

Apple can just make the different watch bodies, in BULK of course, and in their own nice little box, they can pack them up small, and neat in a lovely box, without any worry about what combination will sell well.

Just make and show on the website which of the bodies you want.

In the same way now, you pick the iPhone size, and it's colour and it's memory size.

Then they just make the straps, separate items, like iPad/iPhone cases.
Apple don't now have to bundle a red case with an iPad, a Blue case with an iPad, a Green case with an iPad etc, that would be a pain, so why complicate things and do it with a watch?

It would be far far easier from Apple from a stock planning and distribution standpoint to simply let you pick which body you want, then scroll down and pick which strap you want, and simply ship you the two separate items, and you just lick in the strap when you open the pack.

Apple never had to worry about making too many of combinations people don't like.
And people don't have to buy a strap they don't like, only to then have to replace it with the strap they do like.

Agreed.

The buy now page will be a select your watch body, then a section on select your strap.
And they'll come in two different boxes. Probably.

I doubt it. If I go to a jeweler today, I buy a watch with a band. My guess is that they'll have 34 SKUs. Remember, not all the bands fit all the watches (there are 2 sizes), and not everything matches. They have 2 different shades of stainless steel and aluminum each, and two different gold alloys.

However, you may be able to order a replacement strap separately.

I was thinking about this from a manufacturing/assembly side of things.

Apple will have to make say:

10,000 sports watches packed up and for sale with green straps.
10,000 sports watches packed up and for sale with blue straps.
10,000 sports watches packed up and for sale with yellow straps.
10,000 steel watches packed up with fine steel band
10,000 steel watches packed up with thick steel band
10,000 steel watches packed up with red leather band
10,000 steel watches packed up with brown leather band

And so it goes on and on and on.

What a logistical disaster to manage and more importantly stock.

How much easier for everyone, in Apple to just sell the bodies, and the straps as a add-on item.

That way, they make just the bodies, they make just the straps. they don't have to guess who wants what, or how many of which strap to put with which body. The customer requests the strap (various prices) after selecting the watch body they want.

That would be far far easier for everyone if it was done that way.

Of course, I don't think it will be done that way. Just saying how much easier for Apple and better for consumers if it was done that way. :)

You should get a watch which fits your wrist. The way to look manly is not to get a bigger watch. I'll be getting 38mm.

165mm wrist and the 38mm seems to fit just fine
