check the specs of the nokia 770 and what it was made for and you'll see that it's pretty much a "consuming internet compliant device" with a touch screen/ plus stylus, wi-fi, bluetooth and NO 3G that could easily play games.

I guess that doesn't fall very far from what is expected from the islate (assuming the islate exist, of course...)

Oh, yes, i came out 5 years ago.

These types of similarities are nothing but superficial. Yeah, it will have a battery, wi-fi, blutooth, and it will play standard file formats. But that makes the tablet as similar to this thing as is any portable device made in the last 5 years.

True. But that doesn't prevent GM from making cell phones the size of cars, trucks and SUVs. Plus Kindles, laptop data cards and mifi cards also have cell phone radios built-in. Some people have several of the above, but only carry one.

I haven't seen anyone use a laptop as a cellphone. This guy was talking full on cellphone, not 3G data access.

Car phones are another thing, most are just bluetooth headsets that connect to your existing handsets, not true car phones like we had in the early 90s. Cellphones, the ones used to make phone calls, don't work if they don't fit in your pocket. No one wants to have to carry around a full sized bag for a cellphone.

At least it will never be THIS bad...

I think after 770 posts on this topic, :) I believe we've run into this issue: we're trying to define this "iSlate" tablet computer with yesterday's computing paradigms.

Given what the mad geniuses at Apple (led by Steve Jobs) are going to do with "iSlate," don't be surprised if the device is going to offer features that make you think, "Why didn't I think of this idea before"? After all, they completely redefined the entire portable music player market with the iPod, nearly did it again with the iPhone, and will likely do it again with "iSlate."

In my humble opinion,

"iSlate" will be the first device that begins the process of book and periodical publishers going the digital distribution route on a large scale for the very first time. My examples I cited earlier of totally new style of books, magazines, comics and even Japanese manga barely scratches thes surface of the potential of the potentially landmark device.

One advantage the Tablet will have over my MacBook Air is very simple.

The option of having the screen in PORTRAIT.

So the iSlate is just going to a be a Kindle? I still fail to see why anyone would want to use the iSlate instead a MacBook other than it is smaller and cheaper....

Thanks, but you desperately need to apologise for your total and complete lack of any intelligence considering your rather pathetic response. Your a pure genius sir.
This made me laugh.

My wish list:

:apple: Under $700
:apple: OS X PREFERRED
:apple: Some kind of either 1) a greatly improved version of iPhone OS or 2) a watered down version of Mac OS X
:apple: Full version of iTunes
:apple: HD Video playback
:apple: Fingers not mandatory, ie. pen
:apple: iSight

Other than that I really don't care. There are some other things such as safari browsing but these are things that you just know they will include. I really hope 3G will be optional (most likely will be if at all) because I really have no need for an entire new service on top of my iPhone. I don't care if I have to wait to get it 6 months I JUST WANNA KNOW WHAT IT IS!!!!

If I'm at my laptop I use skype all the time. It's just as easy and it saves minutes. $2.99 for unlimited minutes is an amazing deal. Also, I work in an ER so we get NO signal and using skype over wi-fi for $2.99 a month is heaven.

no chances this tablet will replace the air.. it would be like saying it would replace the macbook pro 13". The specs are almost equal. and the prices are way above 1000$.

So no, i guess it's gonna be a cheap ass system with excellent user interface.

OK, well, Apple putting out a 'cheap ass system' will be a new first.

Again, for those joining the conversation late and not having the full context :

The guy was suggesting that the 10" tablet would make a nice cellphone. IE it would replace your existing handset and holding it up to your ear wouldn't be an issue because of BT headsets.

This is what I've been replying to all this time. Understand the conversation before jumping with ridiculous claims.

And I can use skype over wifi on my cellphone, no need to drag a laptop around.

OK, well, Apple putting out a 'cheap ass system' will be a new first.

Yeah, because an iPod Touch is such an expensive piece of technology.

Here it is

First, it is going to cost more than what most expect. Moaning always follows product launches. Apple uses iPod Slate to merge osX and iphone os. We will see the future of os11 with this iPod Slate. Steve would like to focus on one os and merge the huge success and number of iphone"developers" into osX. Here is what will unfold. iPod Slate is going to be an extension of your mac and a standalone wifi multitouch pressure sensitive drawing pad, sorry wacom input device, iLife, ereader, mail, safari, ichat, game system, apple tv on your lap. When you use the dock and BT keyboard mouse it behaves like a standard osx desktop but by itself it becomes iphone like touch gui. Best of both worlds.
Iphone and iPod touch merge. Cellular now user option.
Att exclusivity is at an end.

It's not "cheap ass", it's certainly good value to me. But it still marketed as an iPod and not as "probably the only computer the average person will ever need".

Why build/support 2 almost identical devices. Buy one and turn on the cellular option if you want it.

Cost cutting. They sell way more iPod Touches. Having cellular hardware in there would just drive up costs. Not to mention you'd lose the thinner iPod Touch format and higher storage capacities.

An iPhone is 600$+ unsubsidized. No one would buy a 600$+ iPod Touch.

Hobe, I find it very hard to believe that the tablet will have phone features because that requires a carrier plan.
No it doesn't REQUIRE a plan, only makes it optional. If you don't build in optional cell phone capability, then adding it probably means external devices (USB) or card slots, neither of which seems very likely. From a business standpoint, if I'm Apple... and if my exclusive deal with AT&T says that I won't sell iPhone products to AT&T competitors... then I definitely build in relatively cheap (hardware) option for this thing to be an "iphone" for the other players.

Besides, all this media consumption everyone foresees needs a Kindle-like always on source so that it can be captured whenever and wherever. wifi only isn't going to cover that base.

Why would someone want to have an iPhone and a tablet that both make phone calls? It makes absolutely no sense at all.

Right, that's my take as well. But not just with the iPhone owners, laptop and Touch owners too. Basically, my imagination goes that if you already have an iTunes connected device... and if all this print media content is not going to be exclusively available ONLY via Tablet (which I think is extraordinarily likely)... what about the Tablet makes it "must have"? That's what I keep asking over and over.

And the answers that come back tend to be this perception that the cost of printing print media is almost all of the price, so now all these publishers will be able to sell their subscriptions for huge discounts (or give them away because NOW an ad-only model can work), or the various answers that go toward Star Trek Tricorders or Minority Report, and so on.

Again, if you suggest the tablet makes a phone call, it may have to have a phone jack to it to make a land-phone call.

So let's equip the business person who does a fair amount of (content production) work for a trip. They have a good laptop, iPhone, iPod touch, and Tablet. They don't want to take it all. What goes in the bag? Right now, it would seem the typical response would be laptop + iphone, and the bases are well covered. What combination gets the tablet in the bag and still covers the bases well?

If the trip is for fun, then I can imagine Tablet and iPhone or Tablet and iPod. If you have some content production to do, maybe I can see Tablet + one of those + keyboard and (maybe) plus mouse (for more precise than finger work). But as soon as I have to pack the keyboard, why not just take laptop & iPhone?

If the Tablet can also be the mobile phone, then maybe it's laptop plus Tablet (but why carry 2 bigger screens).

See the challenge here? What gets the Tablet into the travel bag?

The biggest problem is, you would have to pay for a second phone line OR port your cell line into it as a new account.

Right. I'm not seeing people who own an iPhone being a major buyer of a Tablet. Nor am I seeing people who own a laptop being a major buyer of a Tablet. Unless, the Tablet has exclusive content not available to those devices. Or unless it does the jobs those devices do about as well as they do them.

Voice dictation is hear, so to speak, so perhaps content creation will be a major option. I'm not sure if my voice will hold up as well as my fingers type though. Maybe what we'll see is a combination along with the ability to bind external keyboards, mice, etc. It's a part of the system. I already use my iPod Touch as a control for watching videos via my Mac on my big screen video. The system is more than a device.

Cheers

That question is loaded. It's between the tablet and laptop only. For business, laptop will always win. For fun, you probably need neither.

Your iPhone or other cellphone that can play music/videos/games goes in your pocket, not your bag.

I don't want to have a full sized bag to carry around my cellphone. Size is not just about holding it up to your ear.

Well let's get real here. Even a 10" screen device is going to be a LOT smaller than a 15" laptop. And if it isn't a clamshell with a keyboard, it can be a LOT thinner too.

So, no one would be carry a full-sized bag if they were carrying a 10" tablet. And there's also this rumor of a 7" version, which would fit just fine in the average pocket.

But, yes I get the concept of preferring an iPhone to a Tablet. I'm on the side in this thread of trying to answer the thread's question: "What is the Ultimate Role of the Apple Tablet?" I don't know the answer, but trying to find the way toward some answer suggests to my imagination that it almost has to have optional cell phone hardware inside. I just don't picture it being wifi only.

For a 10", you'd still be carrying around a bag. A man purse maybe ? I don't do purses. Just look at what people use to drag around netbooks. It sure as hell ain't purses or pockets. It's laptop bags.

And an iPhone is quite snug already in my pocket. I doubt a 7" version would fit just fine in the average pocket, unless you're talking G-Unit type jeans.

Neither would make a good cellphone that's for sure.
