I would imagine by highlighting/selecting your harddrive on your desktop and pushing the space bar? Push it again and it will go away.

It is called Quick Look. You highlighted the Hard Drive on your desktop and pressed the space bar. Press the space bar again and it will go away.

quick look must be a leopard thing lol, pushing space bar on Tiger doesn't do that.

Correct. Only Leopard and Snow Leopard.
