I was just wondering what this button (see picture) is for the Iphone 12 under the power button. Anyone know?

Probably a last minute cancelled pencil support. It exists in some oficial photos but not in others. I’m surprised not many noticed this.

Hmmmm... this seems very plausible. When I saw it I immediately thought it was a Pencil connector, but they obviously didn’t announce Pencil support, so I concluded that it must have been an antenna or something.

Question is, are we getting these phones with this useless hole in the casing (reducing structural integrity) or the phones delivered will not actually have this cavity.
Clearly all material in the presentation contained this spot (which looks like pencil charging spot on ipad pro). However most gallery photos in apple store do not show this.

After doing a little more research, I haven’t found a marketing photo without this pill-shaped thing on the side of it, so I‘m led to not believe this was for the Pencil, although that is an exciting theory. It appears on the 12, the 12 mini, the 12 Pro, and the 12 Pro Max. If you look at Apple’s AR previews of the phones, the pill-shaped thing appears to be indented ever-so-slightly into the phone, unlike how it looks on the iPad Pro. This leads me to believe that it is indeed some sort of new antenna for 5G capabilities.

EDIT: in @grantwall’s post, apparently it doesn’t appear in the Canadian store. Maybe it’s something with US carriers?

Why are people still guessing Pencil support? It's the mmWave antenna. This was leaked months ago.

Only the U.S. version has mmWave support. That's why you see different photos. Canada model for example, doesn't have it.

Pretty sure this is the answer. Took a look more in the tech specs and we definitely don't get mmWave here in Canada, which would explain the difference.

I have shown official photos without it, in fact most photos on uk store do not have it. The spot on ipad pro is also indented. I think it was cancelled last minute because they couldn’t get the right components for screen to make it work in the end. Bigger auestion for me is if the spot is just leftover in marketing materials or we will get it in released phones - a non functioning cavity.

Nice, this makes perfect sense. I can't believe I didn't think of that. Makes sense that it would show up on some pictures (because of the US model) and not on the others. They should probably have mentioned it in the presentation because I kept seeing that indentation all throughout the presentation but I didn't know what it was.

You might be right, had to go back to presentation and it does show up on antenna break down. Also, uk is not getting mmwave support so i guess that is why it is missing in most of the marketing material here

The spot on my iPad Pro isn't noticeably indented. You can feel the edge of it, but you can't visibly see the indentation. I think that @JPack is right about what it is - it's an mmWave antenna. I don't think there was ever supposed to be Pencil support for the 12.

You can easily validate that the weird "SIM card" looking thing under the power button thing is an mmWave antenna.

Visit any other Apple Store other than United States, and all of the product shots are just pure stainless steel straight down from the power button.

Only the United States variant has that weird blemish.

I just looked on the UK apple store and i can see the ident when i view it in AR mode On the webstie.
