What is this ear icon and slider (in macOS) for?

Nothing changes when I adjust the slider with the ear icon. I have AirPods Pro 2.

Older post but has anyone used this application for airpods yet here? I am needing hearing aids but it seems none of them have noise cancelling and all amplify outside noises. I want something to cut down on ambient noise so I can hear who I am talking to clearer at work.
