...and you know honey, I am so tired from driving, standing in line, eating that large meal... I think we ought to get a room and stay the night... hint, hint.

I probably wouldn't be able to pull that one off. I have to be back at work at 7 in the morning and she has to go to school at 8 the next day, then to work at 5. But the thought did cross my mind.

ok guys, so instead of helping with trying to get our girlfriends into bed, help with the current topic.(although that is an intriguing topic
btw, on another note, but not to detract from the main topic, if my macbook pro is experiencing random restarts, could i also do something about that?? maybe even just replace the whole damn thing? that would be the best situation i can think of..(its been about a month and a half since i bought this machine).

Can you tell if it is hardware or software related? If software, reinstall OSX. If hardware, call Apple care or take it into the Apple store.

Well it could be that you are overheating. I think that I remember hearing something about that sometime in the last couple of months. Do you get an crash report after this happens? Are you doing anything that is causing your processor usage to spike?

Christopher

whenever it randomly restarts, it does it when im just like surfing the web, or watching videos on youtube. not when im doing some intensive cpu resource hogging program. it might be over heating, but it shouldnt be if im just on firefox should it? after it restarts, it says 'mac os x has crashed blah blah do you want to report'.

and how can i tell if its software or hardware related?

Have you been sending in the crash report? I would say that the next time it happens I would call Apple while you still have the crash report on your screen and ask them about it. There is something wrong, and I would expect a new machine to work without it restarting like that.

Do you have any after market ram in it? If so remove it and run it for a couple of days. If that is not the case, do a system recover to get you a nice, fresh OS on there, it could be something corrupt there. Add in any third party apps 1 at a time with a couple of days between each app installation so that you can see how it runs.

Christopher

i do not have any after market ram, everything is stock. i do have the 7200 rpm drive though which is through apple. but when it does restart, and the crash thing comes up, it doesnt have any kind of crash report, it just says 'mac os x quit unexpectatly' or something along thoes lines, and it has the 'Report' button there. am i missing something?

Unfortunately, I had the same thing on my macbook pro 17" core2 duo 2.33ghz MATTE I bought back in november 2006.

it was in 2 separate areas on the screen and just appeared out of nowhere one day. I think it gradually got darker starting from a lighter colour.

it was annoying to say the least. the pixels don't look like they are dead...just a wierd Smudge look.

I would've thought these sort of things would stop appearing after enough complaints have been made to Apple...but these kind of things just keep popping right on back in newer models.

I have this on my screen also and it appeared two days ago. It's 17' MBP HD matte. Can I do anything about it without going back to apple. I am not a US resident and I am leaving the country for good on sunday.

its not a stuck pixel, so you cant try that color flashing trick, so I'm thinking you HAVE to go through apple to get it repaired. we are currently trying to figure out the best way to approach it

open the console app and see the system logs if you can find something interesting, logs are quite complicated but it can give you a hint on what was going on at the time of the crash. if you can find an app t monitor and save your machines temperature you could this way find out if it's a heat related problem. anyways your laptop should not restart by itself, mine never did. it crashes sometimes but never restarted by itself.

im at the system.log but it only has the logs for today, is there a way to go back to like yesterday or before that?

In the thread Dead pixels/dust under screen? user lu0s3r322 published some additional photos of that issue. My new MBP had exactly the same defects. The amount of the abnormal dark/gray spots was increasing over the days and weeks. The screen has been changed by Apple Service Center two weeks ago without any discussion within 24 hours under warranty. The repair guy just asked me if I had the notbook in humid air conditions. No.

ewll thats good news, i will be calling apple care soon then.. also with my random shutdown problem, its happening more often now like atleast twice a day.

btw. My macbook pro just randomly shut down this instant, but when it restarted, there was no 'mac os x quit expectantly' error pop up.. weird
anyways i looked in my system.log and at the time of the crash, there are many 'failed' leading up to it, but there is nothing like in a 5min range of the crash sequence.
ex. this is the boot up sequence
Sep 20 01:00:26 localhost kernel[0]: hi mem tramps at 0xffe00000
Sep 20 01:00:26 localhost kernel[0]: PAE enabled

and before that is just things that seem to be coneccted to networking, which was like 8 minutes before that sequence above

and it was not over heating, as I placed my hand on where most of hte heat generates, and i would approximate it at around 55-60ish C. if it was higher my hand would be burning after like 5 seconds

Well I have my reservation to get my PowerBook looked at tomorrow. I will let you know how things went as soon as I get back from Atlanta. It will probably be like 7 or so, eastern time.

Christopher

Well I dropped my Powerbook off yesterday and was told that they would have to ship it off to their repair depot. I should have it back in 5-7 days, but I could hear from someone within the next couple of days if there is any reason that they cannot repair mine. <Fingers Crossed> I will update ya'll when I hear anything else.

Good luck!

Well my PowerBook is on a DHL van and is supposed to be delivered today. They tried yesterday but no one was home, on a side note they did leave me a "we missed you" tag and it had DELL on it. I just thought, hmmm why would I have some dell piece of junk delivered here. I hope to go home today and see how my PowerBook screen looks and see if my Bluetooth actually works this time.

Well I will have another update tonight.

Christopher

I have the same problem on my 12" PB. Just appeared out of no where one day. It looks to me like it's actually behind the color part of the LCD but in front of the backlight. Could definitely be a large piece of dust because it's close to the edge of the screen.

Thank goodness that mine is in the lower right hand corner quite out of the way. Although, my screen is colors are fading. I can't even see the blue lines in the iTunes playlist anymore no matter how I calibrate the screen. Boo, for LCD screens.

Well my PowerBook is indeed back and the screen did get replaced. I have looked REALLY close at every area of the screen and it is perfect. I am so happy. There was also a problem with my bluetooth, it just didn't work, they changed it out and it is now working. It also seems to have a lot better wireless signal. Where I used to have 1 bar i now have a full scale. I am going to go out into the front yard and see how far this new range is.

Christopher

Oh god, its happening to my 23" ACD. I had it a while back on my 15" MBP. I can't believe how widespread this problem is amongst LCDs, anyone has any idea whats actually happening? Leakage, dust, mould blah?

Wow. That SUCKS. What are you going to do?

Wow. That SUCKS. What are you going to do?

I mean seriously theres no point for me in exchanging for one and having the same thing happen to my ACD again (short story was that my MBP's screen got changed twice and its happening again). It seems like a gradual thing. I can live with it, its only obvious when theres something white being displayed.

I might get it changed eventually when it worsens (which I think it will). Anybody here has any technical knowledge on LCDs or work in the industry? I'm very curious as to how these things pop up.
