What is this thing on the power adapter?

I purchased my macbook today, and noticed this odd thing on the cable. What is its purpose?

It holds the wire in place when you roll or fold it in on itself.

It's a clip that will attach to the same cord after it's wound, securing it. Try it.

Note: The power adapter also has fold-out "ears" that can be used to wrap the cord around it neatly...

That's the incorrect way to wrap your power cable. Doing it like that will result in this:

A loop should be made before the wrapping commences;
