Never ever have I seen this and it just occured today because I checked for updates yesterday and it worked fine.

I did install XCode yesterday but I don't think that should cause any problems.

Being a newbie I've not actually pressed this button !

I assumed I would get some form of message when an update is available !

Come on folks.....Apple is obviously having a problem with its servers or it is updating something on the servers.

Same error notification here as well and I definitely have a working connection. Could just be maintenance or whatnot.

Apple usually won't release a ton of smaller patches. Instead they opt for bundling them all together AFAIK (depends on how critical a bug/feature is, I guess). My updater is scheduled to check every friday, not on every boot, if I don't check manually.
