I noticed this on my iPhone X but I’m not sure what it means or what it’s an indicator of.

When you set up as a new device it’s an indicator that you swipe down for control centre.

Just a simple reminder that you can access the control center by swiping down from that side.
That icon is control center icon.

That’s the Control Center icon. Maybe it’s just there to indicate you can swipe from that location to open it?
