That's really hard to believe... amazing if true! My 2.2Ghz Macbook Pro w/ 2Gig Ram and 7200 RPM HDD does it in 35.4

However... bios load times aren't a real indicator of machine speed. I'd say better benchmarks are from the apple logo appearing to dock coming up.

The more you have in / attached to your machine, the LONGER the bios initialization period, etc.

Esp. coming from the world of PCs... if you have a ton of super fast things attached, it'll take twice as long to boot through the bios sequence... doesn't mean the machine is twice as slow ;-) (i.e., SCSI cards attached, etc. etc. etc.)

Completely true! I timed it agin this morning to be sure. The Apple logo appears within a second, so it's maybe eighteen and a half seconds from the logo to fully fuctioning desktop. So, my MacBook pwns all. :D

EDIT: Oh, and I got it used :D

grrr, is a there any hardware explanation why a brand new penryn mac pro is getting burned by mac books?

from when i press the power button to when i'm logged in (including the time to enter my password) it's about 25 seconds. that's faster than the SSD MBA as far as I've seen. who knew?

12-14 seconds. Thats with RAID 0, with the stock 320GB slug, it's like 20-25 seconds.

my MP boots to desktop in less than a minute. Don't know exact time. I'm using OS X server so it adds some to boot time.

any ideas?

Does anyone have any ideas on what could be affecting my boot times with the WD 640?

MP 2.66Ghz - X1900 3gb memory

OSX Tiger - Stock 500GB: ~15-~26 seconds depending if its after an update or an extensive use or howlong it was shut down/restarted

XP - 500GB: ~40-~65 seconds, which is a pretty fast boot time, have next to nothing at start up, (minus typical bootcamp drivers/prefs, O&O Disk defrag and a firewall, noneed for AV)

Leopard - 500GB External drive via FW: ~19-~32 seconds pretty good for a external OS being booted.

RE: Seconds to boot

I know this might seem a bit lame, but I am curious as to the amount of time it takes everyone to boot their new mac pro. More specifically, how many seconds is it from pressing the power button to loading the desktop. Also it would be helpful to know your system configuration.

I have a 2.8 octo w/8800, stock 500gb (Western Digital), 6gigs of ram and it takes me exactly 44.6 seconds.

That's about the same time within two seconds plus or minus than my G4 AGP tower (ten years old now), PPC running 10.4.11. 2 GB RAM, 1.8 Sonnet single processor. I think a lot has to do with what's connected to your machine. Unplug all your USB stuff except your keyboard, and reboot. See if it makes a difference. When a machine boots, it casts out a line to see what's connected. These peripherals respond and "talk" to your board at their own speed, so could add time. I also bought a Hewlett Packard scanner, because it got good reviews, and I can tell you my experience is that H-P doesn't know how to write good Mac software. They are too Microsoft oriented. My machine would load some little app called H-P Manager, which would always suck up about 2% of my processor, indicated by Activity Monitor, even when all the regular H-P apps for my scanner were quit and the scanner was turned off! It ticked me off, so I encrypted the file where it sat so it could not run, and believe it or not, it seems to have no effect whatsoever on my scanner or any of its functions. And now I have my 2% of processor available for other things. In my opinion, added software as well as added external or internal hardware can slow down boot time.
