I was there but I think it would be best if you turn your fans up a bit, at least until the next update/leopard gets here.

I sure hope Apple gets a clue that the iMac isn't very loud, even with the fans turned up a little past half way.

Last night I did a UT2k4 match in XP, 5 hours worth of playing, I got back in to OSX, the fans were all about 2000rpm (+/- 100)

If there was a program that was able to control the iMacs fans in XP, I'd crank all those babies up full blast when playing games, I don't care I use a headset when gaming anyway.

That is ridiculous considering the HDD fan can go 5500, CPU can go like 3500 or something, and optical can go 4200 or something I forget, a little loudness is NOT going to bother me to prolong the life of the system.

I think the idle fan speeds should be around 1800rpm for optical, 2000 for CPU, and 2300 for HDD, and ramp up from there way more aggressively than they do now.

mines chilling on a nice 83°C

EDIT: wait 82°C now lol.

Hey, I have a question. Looks like you're getting those readings from iStat Pro, right? I have the latest version of that widget, but I don't have some of those readings (like the power supply temp). What version are you using?

I thought the same until someone told me that you need to view it in vertical view to see all of the temps.

iMac 24" 2.8Ghz Core 2 Extreme

Power Supply Position 1 = 69.0?C

And I just finished encoding 9 WMV files to h.264 using Visual Hub.

I need to know idle temps, my power supply temp goes to 71C when I'm gaming, but it idles way too hot imo.

hhmm thats a good idea actually. the only reason why i havent turned them up is because its in my brothers room, and i leave it on constantly with the screen off and he doesnt realise (no sleep light :))

yup thats correct, im just using the newest version. uumm if you hit the "i" on the istat pro widget you should be able to select in there somewhere what temperatures are shown in the widget...

Hey, just thought I would revisit this old-ish thread. I'm currently handbraking a DVD and my CPU temp is up to 59°C. My power supply is at 83°C!!!

Personally I think the PS is running a little hot. I have the 24" Alu iMac 2.8GHz Extreme version, 500GB RAM and 4GB crucial memory. I'm getting the 3.06GHz iMac soon so it will be interesting to see what temps it gets up to when I handbrake the same DVD. I will report back...

iMac temps

24" alu, 2.8 Ghz, 4 gigs ram.

My mac usually runs at between 40c-50c at a room temp of 20-25c if I have seti running or one of the Grid computing programs that I run - then I use smcFanControl at between 1500 and 1800 rpm on the CPU fan to bring the temp down to between 40 and 50c.

I don't have any problems when watching DVDs, burning disks or anything else.

Guess I really have a problem

My 20" Imac 2.4GHZ is showing power supply temps all the way up to 113 degrees. Thats nearly twice some others here. I have ordered a refurbished replacement for 69.00 from http://www.dvwarehouse.com. I sure hope this fixes it. The symptoms I experienced first were it would slow down and fail to restart on reboot. I noticed that when I unpluged it for a while it would boot again. Then I read on a post some where about istat and downloaded it and began to monitor things. Setting infront of a cold open window it will run in the eighties but after 30 minutes or so I'm pushing 100 and better. Has anyone else seen temps this high? Could it be a fan not working? Any thoughts.

A bit late, but...

I've only just discovered this topic as a result of a problem with my (narcoleptic) 2.8GHz 24" iMac from mid 2008. Basically, my PSU position 1 reading tops 95C and the machine auto sleeps. I let it cool down, then resume, and all is well until it hits that magic 95C and shuts down.

Thankfully, I have Applecare. This has been going on a little while now and I'm hoping they will just send me a 27" in replacement as who knows what such high temps (200+F for you US folks) will have caused in the longevity of my machine...

So, better switch it off and get backing up once it cools :(
