Well you could add it to the "other" option
Bah, when I posted there were only Male and Female options! Poll editing FTL.
i thought we had one of these a year or so back. a new one won't hurt though. this forums is obviously heavily male oriented. i'd guess maybe at max 20% female.

Well, technically "prefer not to say" is, because if someone who preferred not to say didn't vote at all, the percentages of the vote will be skewed you will have final percentages that don't represent the whole population of the forum.
If those people vote "prefer not to say", you know the size of the group you're dealing with, and so the percentages are accurate.
Anyway, no-one's voted that anyway.
when i started here on macrumors, under different names, in 2000, it was almost exclusively young males who were very adept at computing, programming, science, etc
then when the community discussion forums started getting more popular, the demographic changed and some older folks came in
i still think the female gender is rather rare here and if this poll has more people respond over the days i would venture to say the females on this forum are less fewer than ten percent

I am an other. My ancestors were aliens who went to Atlantis and later became humans and escaped to Egypt when Atlantis was destroyed. There are some traces of alien "stuff' in my male body.
I knew I would find brethern here on the forums. I hail from the Aztec/Mayan merging versus the Atlantis sect. For the record though we never fully became humans...perhaps you have not yet activated your repressed 'alien' DNA. Time is short so get moving 12/21/2012 is coming.

It's not so much that the percentages are accurate as it is that you know by how much the percentages could be skewed. If there's a confounder, that is, that people of a certain gender are more likely to click "prefer not to say," the other percentages will be thrown off. But yes, it's good to have a sense of what that question mark category is, if you can't have anything else.
