You dont need balls to spend money. They get in the way of valuable pocket space! :D

I'm sure that I can replace the balls with two hard drives that are easily installed

Realistically? A 20" iMac would suit me just fine, and do everything I need it to do. But, I still really want a MacPro. I still have another year of highschool, but if I were heading off to college, I'd find a way to buy:

Two 3GHz Dual
1GB
250GB HDD
X1900XT
Airport Extreme

$3,698. Ouch.

Same here. Realistically my iMac G5 does what I currently need for my current video-editing projects, but I'll be getting a Mac Pro for it's expandibility etc.. and the larger 20-inch widescreen monitor I have waiting for it.

I'm also interested in occasionally running Windows, as some of my GPS software is for Windows only.

Tempting to save some money on the base 2Ghz model, but I think I'll spring for the 2.66Ghz and reduce to 160Gb for the system drive instead. Get some more RAM when it's cheaper.

It's already made easy to upgrade, why not do it yourself?
Because no one carries ram for the mac pro yet. And it will probably be the same price as apple's when it comes out for a little while.

I think at this point I would get the 3.0 ghz model with everything else baseline. That would allow me the maximum processing power from the get-go, and everything else I can upgrade as needed (on the cheap, too).

Sounds like a plan.

It's funny I find myself back here at macrumors forum....after a 2 year hiatus.

I originally ordered a dual processor powermac....but i got pissed at my order taking so long to ship.....so I jetted for a $1300 pc.

And now, I'm looking to get into the mac fold ALL over again. Shipping in 3-5 biz days??? perfect.

If I was purchasing my Mac Pro today.

2.66Ghz
3GB RAM
500GB HDD
ATI 1900 Video Card
Airport + Bluetooth

23" Cinema Display

I have a budget of $5000 NZD for the computer, and $1800 NZD for the display. I'm hoping I can get more bang for my buck after WWDC..

What is YOUR Optimal Mac Pro Config.

In the Real World, Using Real Money... whatever your budget will allow? Sure, I know we all want the best and be able to MAX it out... But realistically, for what you need, and what you can afford... what is your Config?

For me...?

Quad 3GHz Xeons
4GB (4x1GB) RAM
2x 500GB Hard Drives
1x Radeon X1900XTX Video Card
One Super Drive
Bluetooth - No Airport
One 23 Inch Apple Monitor

You?

Ditto. Although not at one go though....realistically

EDIT: With Airport by the way

Depending on when I purchase, the processor and video card would change:

Now: Quad 3.00GHZ Xeons
ATI X1900XT
BT/AE
4GB RAM
1 SuperDrive
1x160GB HD (add more aftermarket)

NEC 20.1" Advanced Super In-Plane Switching widescreen monitor (AS-IPS)

If the Mac Pro is updated to Clovertown:

Octo 3.00GHz Xeons with total of 16MiB L2 Cache (the new ones they just announced at $1152/processor, otherwise the 2.66GHz version that is now priced just below the 3GHz dual core at release)
Updated Video Card- hopefully NVidia 8800 series or ATI R600 series
4GB RAM
BT/AE
1 SuperDrive
1x160GB HD

If I hold out until Penryn:

Octo >3GHz (possibly up to 4GHz, from certain reports on Penryns) Xeons with total of 24MiB L2 Cache, possibly a faster FSB?
Upgraded video card
4GB RAM, possibly more
BT/AE
Blu-Ray drive
1x250GB HD

if i ever upgrade, it seems when Penryn is out i might start thinking about it :)

i already have a mac pro:

2.66
2Gb RAM
ATI 1900
500 GB HD
400 GB HD
300 GB HD
250 GB HD
1 Superdrive
bluetooth + wireless

right now i need more ram

- 2.66ghz
- 5 x 500gb HD. For a total of 2.5TB. Yes I have one in the optical bay
- 5gb Ram
- 2 x 7300 video cards
- Bluetooth and wifi
- 30" Cinema Display

I'm going to start paying attention to this thread now... I'm trying to get more heavy into videomaking on my macs and I want to get a Mac Pro for this.

For now, I'm there on a portable front: I have upgraded my 15" PowerBook G4 to a 15" 2.16ghz MacBook Pro w/ Final Cut Express. Gotta take the RAM to 3gb though.

A couple months after Santa Rosa's out, Leopard's out, etc., I'm going to hand this laptop off to my wife (who's due to upgrade anyways from her early 2005 purchases iBook g4) and buy the newer macbook pro for myself.

But after that's done... then I'm going to focus on replacing my 1.42ghz Mini G4 w/ a Mac Pro that's designed for really heavy editing. I'm thinking early next year? That'll give me enough time to figure out exactly what I need from the Mac Pro and what it can offer because I'm really not sure what it has.

I can't afford it without taking most of my savings. But if I DID take most of my savings...

I'd buy it stock, the only upgrade I make being the X1900XTX video card and Airport, no bluetooth. I'd use education discount.

Then I'd order a few more gigs of RAM and a pair of 500 GB hard drives from NewEgg and slap them in there and hook them up to my current 20" monitor (or buy a third party one).
