What is your plan on utilizing your retired PowerBook G4?

I got a new MBP for Christmas and I've been trying to figure out a use for the G4 1.67 15". It's still a good computer, although the lower RAM slot died so I only have 1GB of RAM now. I'd like to eventually use it for a Media/photo server in the living room...but I need a new TV before I can use it for that purpose.

Seems like all the 1.67 PowerBook G4s are all F***ed up, The 17" versions have faulty LCDS. the 15" versions have Lower Memory slot problems, and there never was a 1.67Ghz 12" PowerBook.

Well, here's the latest use of my Powerbook G4 1Ghz Ti.

I just bought one (15") because of the PCMCIA slot (Standard size, not Express)...It's a direct match for the P2 cards from Panasonic for offloading video in the field. No futzing around with connecting the camera, Host mode, etc. I also loaded FCP on it for simple field edits and DVD burns.

Just plug the P2 card into the G4PB and offload. I paid 400 bucks locally and it's perfect in every way. Decent battery (about 80 minutes)...only thing I've noticed is a bit dimmer of an LCD than I'm used to with my MBP.

It's amazing...I am a recent Mac convert (about 3 years ago) from 20 years of Windoze and PCs. There was NEVER a computer that I had (PC), laptop or desktop that was worth half that much on the used market 5 years after I bought it....nor did I have a PC that would work half that well after a half decade:) I'm very impressed with the G4PB of yester-year!

All this because of this thread. It made me a confident buyer

Thanks everyone!

Even though I got a MacBookPro last March, I still use the G4 Powerbook when I am traveling or working in a park somewhere.

Now that I intend on getting an iPad, I will give my Powerbook as well as my iPod Touch to my nine year old daughter, since she is quite proficient on both.

Not retirement material - for a long while, yet!

Well my Powerbook G4 still feels like it's got PLENTY of life left in it - I use it EVERY day, it gets lugged around in a soft carry case and I use it for light Photoshop, Quark, Illustrator and for doing my timesheets and accounts on in Excel. 15" 400MHz Titanium, 10GB Drive and 192MB RAM. Running 9.1. It screams!!! :D

Just as a warning: not all 1.67Ghz PowerBook G4s are duds - Mine is coming up to its 5th Birthday - havent had a problem with it..... *heres where it dies on me* - Beautiful machine, even if I am using it as a NetBook xD
