There was a funnel shaped web where I caught the spider. I'm pretty sure it's a funnel web...isn't the Hobo spider somehow related with the funnel web spider?
Some have a similar pattern, but it def isn't a funnel web, there only found in Austrailia if I recall. Funnel web is this bad boy with huge fangs, venom can kill a man in a couple minutes:

actually just came across this picture, looks like the spider you have, similar markings and the hair/spines whatever on the legs... it's a Lynxx Spider, you can find different lynnx googling.

i too think its a wolf spider ..quiet a young one , when they get older the abdomen gets bigger and more rounded and they get a union jack pattern on their back(not on the abdomen) and then easier to identify and they become about as big (with legs )as the palm of your hand
i like spiders , they make great pets , ..keep the house clean of other insects like flies and even moskitos

but its definitely no Brown Recluse nor is it a black widow , so dont worry if the little guy bites its only painful :D

the cutest are jumping spiders , they have a face that looks like a smiley due to the 2 big front facing eyes , the other 6 eyes are more on the side and a lot smaller

spiders in general are harmless , even the most poisonous ,they only bite as a very last resort in self defence as humans are not on their menu list

Ok, this little guy looks freaking cute. Don't like spiders but he/she looks pretty darn cool!

Wrong mate. The Australian family of funnel web spider are way more dangerous but common grass spiders and the hobo spiders are still part of the funnel web family.
