Im still toying with the idea of keeping the ibook for use as a desktop with an external monitor. Any ideas I'd sell it for if I decided to sell it? Or shall I keep it as an everyday light surfing kinda' thing?

Yes, keep it. As I said, the monitor won't be locked to the G3, so if it bites the dust you can get something else and use the monitor with it. (Just a shame it's not an early G4, though - those are much nicer than a G3, but at least it's a pretty decent G3.)

If you do sell it, though, grab an eMac if you want a desktop machine. As others have mentioned, they're not bad machines at all, especially the last revision.

Yeahh, good advice, the ibook lives on then! :D

On my Dell? There's no need to do that... Also, theres no competition on the amount of software available between the two/three Os'

i was thinking in terms of online security...no way i would feel good about vista and doing any online transactions....

It's more that Vista is known for being a heavy load on weaker systems, and Linux can be either worse or better depending on your environment. (KDE 4 and GNOME 3 being the heavier ones, and Xfce and LXDE being lighter ones... personally, I use Openbox and the tint2 panel on my Linux setups.)

Also, yes, Windows is a bit less secure and much more prone to malware, but from my experience good browsing habits will keep you safe. And don't be afraid to sandbox anything you may think suspicious or do not trust - a VM running Linux of any sort works well for this.

I doubt, the iBook G3 supports clamshell mode without mirroring.

Honestly I would sell the iBook for parts and if i need a cheap and reliable production tool, a used Powermac G4 would be my choice.

PPC Macs were never that strong in consuming media or entertainment use, but they are still strong as a creation or production tool, using appropriate software, of course. I think, even then with 5 or 7 year old software, in a lot of creative scenarios, the most limiting factor, wouldn't be the computer or software itself. A G4 would still be enough for creating wonderful artworks, pictures, presentations and so on. It depends on what you want to do...

To me, keeping the not portable iBook makes no sense, not even for light production use, considering the low resolution you would have on an external display.
