Apple can replace a battery, so there is no reason to upgrade until the phone is not useable due to speed, maxed out on O/S version or other.

When I got first iPhone the Apple genius said there will be a new one each year, I have to update to. So I have been. o_O...baaaah

Besides if I don't upgrade each year there might be a shortage of used iPhones going to immigrant's relatives in Middle East.

design over function in my case. It used to be different but iOS has become pretty boring but i just cant deal with Android otherwise i would have gotten the S8 already, it is gorgeous

Why don't u upgrade to the SE? It's super fast and will still get updates for a good 3 to 4 years. Is the SE too big? I'm just curious
its such a beautiful phone but its too long, i wanna be able to reach top left with my right thumb, its so convenient, i can not live without this.
but honestly i don't use my phone a lot, its almost all time in fly mode, most used feature is the flashlight :p
for me a mobile phone is the most stressful device ever created, giving other people the opportunity to disturb you at any given time in any situation is mostly wasted time.
i realized this years ago, its like half a day im on the phone....and not much work was done at the end of the day.

I have a 64 GB 6S Plus, fairly happy with the phone but would like to see a bigger screen & new features.

Depending on what is announced this fall I might keep this phone & go with an Apple Watch instead. I use the phone a lot but use my iPad & Mac a lot more.

i cannot reach top left and bottom right conveniently on a iPhone 5 like i can on a 4.
i have normal hands :) tried every iPhone till the latest.

The last two times I upgraded was because I wasn't happy with the phone(s).

First, it was the nightmare I endured with Apple and my 6 plus when it got touch disease. Instead of paying $329 to fix it, I upgraded to an SE because I didn't want to spend $1000 on another phone and a 90 warranty on a "refurbished" wasn't worth it to me.

After about 9 months of ownership, the tiny screen just wasn't cutting it for me so I upgraded to a 7 and now I am quite happy.

iPhone 5 - Carrier never had iPhones (T-Mobile)
iPhone 6+ - Bigger screen
iPhone 6S+ - Warranty exchange on IP6+. They sent me a new IP6+

Last two times it's been issues with the phone (busted SIM card reader on the 6, battery drain issues on the 6s). I am babying the heck out of my iP7+ though as I'd like to have it for at least 2 years.

Even if you upgrade to the newest iPhone,
You can find some really competitive sale prices on the Series 1 Apple Watch. And if they announce a new Series 3 Apple Watch this Fall, Series 1/2 will likely see a price drop. (But I'm doubtful a new Watch will launch this Fall.)

Do you upgrade because of wants or needs? Do you lose money upgrading routinely and if so, what's your justification?

Both. I don't upgrade because my phone is old. I'd upgrade because that brand new model might have some neato features that I'd really like to have access to.

For example, reliable TouchID was one of the reasons I had to have the 6S. It was when the TouchID became really solid, mature and reliable and trustworthy enough for regular ApplePay transactions. And since then I've been a regular ApplePay user. My fingerprint TouchID has been working with uhh…. like 100% accuracy since I've been using ApplePay. It. Just. Works.

My upgrades from the 3g through 5 were all based on performance. My 6 was a need for more internal storage capacity. I skipped the 6s. I went with a 7+ again for more storage, plus the Dual Camera Setup. I never thought I would want a device larger than 4.7". I could not go back now. I 'll skip the 7s, and see what is out there mid 2018. :apple:

Mostly because I want to. I've had the iPhone 5, 5s, 6 and now 6S Plus. The iPhone 7 just didn't really make sense to me plus I am holding out for the true successor the 6/6S form factor (iPhone 8 or w/e they will call it). I want an OLED in my next iPhone.

I feel like mine are more so wants than needs. I first got the iPhone 4, upgraded from a Blackberry 9650. Then I got the 5, needed the LTE and wanted something a little bigger, then I got the 6 and later "upgraded" to the iPhone SE 64gb because I thought I wanted a smaller phone with more space. A few weeks ago I had the iPhone 7 256gb but realized I wanted something a little bigger and I didn't need 256gb of space, so I ended up paying the rest of that one off and buying a iPhone 7+ 128gb, so far I haven't had an itch to upgrade to anything else.

I typically upgrade iPhones every single year, mainly just because I want the upgrade specifications and I'm huge into tech, more specifically Apple. But this year will be an interesting year with the iPhone 8.

What makes me decide to upgrade phones?

Peer pressure like no other. I get this sense of being superior if I hold a latest iPhone in front of my friends. I also love how their faces change from awe to envy to downright hate. It is also a sign that you have the right attitude towards life.
It is a different high and one has gotta experience it every now and then. :)

Doesn't work for me. That's probably because a lot of my coworkers have Lexus, BMW and Audi while I drive a lowly 8-yr old Toyota or Honda (oldest was a 15-yr old Nissan) since all my funds go to tech. :p

You can't compare cars to phones. Different price category all-together.

Feature phone -> blackberry (need email) ; after that changed to few newer version (because the old one get so slow)-> change to android (fun to use apps, change several times, mostly because battery and lag) -> change to iphone 5, although it's a nice phone, i bought another blackberry just because of the keypad, email and hub -> change back to android (for bigger screen) -> finally back to iphone 6s+ (can't stand for bad batt performance). Still use iphone 5 for my personal phone, which only for banking apps
