What might be an alternative to the iPad homescreen?

I like the home screen on the iPhone. It looks clean and tidy and it lets you find what you are looking for quickly. On the iPad however (which I like and I am going to buy anyway), I think the home screen looks a little awkward. It almost looks like a desktop where you have files on the hole screen.

Do anyone see an alternative to todays home screen? Of-course it'l have to be simple and easy to use.

If the ipad can be jailbroken, I wonder what people will come up with. I think of the iphone, 5 icon dock, 5 row springboard, pogoplank etc.

I'd like to see a couple of widgets. Even if they're only on the lock screen. Something like weather, stocks, and webclips.

Otherwise, I don't see how it could be more simplified.

It is not like I don't think it's simple, I just think it doesn't fit the big screen.

I'd like to have some widgets as well. Being able to see my inbox and agenda for the day/week, for example, right on the home screen was one of the things that other mobile OS's get right. With all the space on the screen, I can see allocating 25-33% of it for widgets and the rest for app icons.

There are options, although it's hard to know what would be the best for a large iPod Touch. The iriver P7 have a magazine page style home screen. The Zune HD has vertical rows with horizontal pages. One of the tablet prototypes out there put a row of icons along the right in an arch, supposedly where the natural swing of your arm would expect them to be. I can picture a 3D cube that you would swipe to spin, with each side of the cube being another page of apps or eventually each a running app.

I'm for putting the icons where they are most natural to reach, with those most used becoming the easiest to hit. Since the background can be changed this could leave more of it revealed.

I think the best way for this to work, would be if you could select half (or any amount you want) for some sort of third party applicaiton that has live feeds from your inbox or twitter (any social netwroking sites) and allows you to jump right into the app from there.

    Could be a good application.

if the dev team get their hands on this, there is anything that could be done, and once some sort of hackins is available, i will be working on it to create something that will bring a better desktop feel to the home screen.

    No.

Wait, do you mean iPhone OS? As that's what it is.

I want it customisable like a Nokia N900. If I want icons for app shortcuts, I can have them (on top of the 5-6 in the dock). I can always swipe to open a new page for more of my apps.

Then at least my inbox with unread count, and a few latest subject lines. A calendar with my upcoming appointments

Optionally a couple of RSS feeds or twitter, somethign like that.

I'd like them to basically open the home screen up for live widgets, perhaps leveraging the OSX dashboard developers out there.

I say keep it simple. Maybe a widget to show newest mail or next calendar appointment.
